Sitaare Zameen Par story:

Gulshan Arora (Aamir Khan) receives a community service term for driving while intoxicated, and he is a messy basketball instructor. Initially, he trains neurodiverse people with a prejudiced and condescending approach, but he quickly learns that they are showing him the real meaning of life.

Review of Sitaare Zameen Par:

With the touching Taare Zameen Par, a film that brought attention to dyslexia in both children and adults, Aamir Khan brought the year to a close in 2007. The movie subtly blended the plot and assisted viewers in comprehending this learning impairment. However, about 18 years later, Aamir has put out another film that integrates sports into the plot and openly examines the tale of a group of neurodivergent individuals. The actor makes a conscious effort in this picture to avoid falling into the savior syndrome that has defined many of his previous roles.

Frankly, it's a nice break to watch Aamir star in a movie where he doesn't rescue anyone from anything or realize their aspirations, and where he also unifies the entire world with his extended, teary-eyed soliloquies. However, aside from being an official replica of the 2018 Spanish movie Campeones and a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par, how does Sitaare Zameen Par stand alone as a distinct film? Let's see...

Without delay, the movie presents the "Sitaare" team by showing Gulshan Arora, a volatile young basketball coach, being sacked from his position as an assistant coach for the Delhi basketball team after a dispute on the court. What reason did he have for striking the senior coach? He goes crazy as soon soon as a senior coach calls him "tingu". To be honest, the incident is the first time that the actor's height has been brought up for debate in any of his films from the last thirty years. Additionally, Gulshan doesn't come to terms with his height and other associated problems until the very conclusion.

Everything in his life turns upside down when the new crew arrives, and it seems as if the universe is against him in every way, making him feel powerless. Gulshan has been compelled to hear about his shortcomings every now and then about having confrontational issues and failing to view the world through other people's eyes because of his unfiltered mother, Dolly Ahluwalia, and his estranged wife, Suneeta (Genelia Deshmukh). He keeps persuading himself that he is a victim and that the world is treating him unfairly by making him suffer. But in spite of his flaws, which, frankly, are not all that important in his real life, the "Sitaare" teaches him how to live his life. However, as Gurpal Singh's character in the movie says, "Har ek ka apna normal hota hai."

In fact, we frequently define the word "new normal" and see its manifestation in the environment around us. For every individual who deviates from societal norms, acceptance is essential. We see a progression that is not obvious, from a bus trip where the team and Gulshan are called out by other passengers, saying that "people" like them should travel on a "special" bus, to a flight where folks are conversing with them as if they were any "normal" person.

However, despite a funny scene in which he makes an effort to defend his "Sitaare", Gulshan never comes out to do so during this time. However, this is a man who, for once, has not completely embraced these ideas and who is not in a position to defend them until he has lived them.

Despite the absence of moralizing, Sitaare Zameen Par manages to raise awareness with its humorous and moving scenes. However, it takes time for that to develop until the interval point, when we are gradually being brought into this world and all of the characters' backstories are also resolved.

But the second half moves the story along at a good pace. The movie spends its time properly introducing each character, making sure they stick in our minds even after we leave the theater, despite a few scenes that may seem out of place.

In the end, the film's most notable character is Gulshan, a middle-aged manchild who matures throughout the story under the guidance of the "Sitaare," which is made up of Aroush Datta as Satbir, Gopi Krishnan Varma as Guddu, Vedant Sharmaa as Bantu, Naman Misra as Hargovind, Rishi Shahani as Sharmaji, Rishabh Jain as Raju, Ashish Pendse as Sunil Gupta, Samvit Desai as Kareem Qureshi, Simran Mangeshkar as Golu Khan, and Aayush Bhansali as Lotus.

However, Divy Nidh Sharma wrote the screenplay for Sitaare Zameen Par, which was directed by RS Prasanna, and it's not the kind of movie that will put you to the test and make you feel like you need to leave right away. The movie brings you along on a journey full of events that might seem superfluous, but they are there because the writing prioritizes rationalizing each character's role rather than having them behave intentionally only because they are a part of the film. Indeed, there are some characters among the "Sitaare" who have lengthy arcs, which may feel forced at times, but that's where the movie succeeds; they are not simply the characters who drive the plot and help Gulshan become a better coach. However, even though they are aware that the people around them are not smiling and that they are not living the kind of straightforward life they should be, they are still living a life with a grin.

On the other hand, when it came to Gulshan's performance as Aamir, it felt like the actor had simply become himself in the movie, giving the impression that he was present rather than acting. On the other hand, the performer sometimes reverts to his 3 Idiots persona with childish antics, like a college student who is lost when beginning a new life. Although Aamir has the most fun in the movie, I had to take some time to realize that he was able to play such a joyful part after playing a more reliable role in his previous movie, Laal Singh Chaddha. Nevertheless, we cannot ignore the fact that watching him develop a character on screen one after another and make sure he doesn't repeat himself is always a pleasurable experience.

However, as we have seen so much of the actor on the Internet with his promotional efforts, Gulshan this time evolved into a combination of many of his characters and eventually himself.

Although it had all the essential ingredients, something about Sitaare Zameen Par seemed amiss. The music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy didn't strike me since it lacked memorable tunes. Due to its resemblance to the Aye Khuda tune from Paathshala, the background music also became a bit of a distraction. Conversely, the movie thankfully incorporates music that is merely in the backdrop, but it eventually transforms into a sort of white noise.

Dolly Ahluwalia is another performer who stands out as Gulshan's single mother. She is someone who, despite having showered him with affection, is now atoning for her actions by telling it how it is. Their banter is too enjoyable to observe, and she never hesitates to speak up. However, Genelia does make an effort to highlight the best of her acting talents. Although the age difference between the two actors is minor, the actor does appear to be mature on screen, and there aren't many memorable moments or interactions between them.

Given the upbeat atmosphere and the opportunity to see something lighthearted, you may not want to miss Sitaare Zameen Par on the big screen. Frankly speaking, it's the most watchable commercial movie that has been released this year so far, so why would you want to miss an Aamir Khan movie? But go without the baggage of Taare Zameen Par, as the film only bears the title of the film and not its profound emotions.

Verdict on Sitaare Zameen:

In Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan abandons the halo and embraces humility, allowing the true stars—his neurodivergent team—to shine the brightest. It's less about déjà vu from Taare Zameen Par and more about a man-cosmic child's crash course in empathy.
