"Pyaar andha hota hai (love is blind)." Believe me, that's a real quote from the movie "Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan," which follows the story of Jahaan, a visually impaired singer, who meets Saba (played by Shanaya Kapoor in her debut) on a train heading to a picturesque location. As part of her training for a role, she is blindfolded since she wants to be an actress. Their tale starts when she is unaware of his inability to see.
A love tale that isn't fully developed
The Ruskin Bond tale that served as the basis for It's All In The Eyes was a short story for a reason: the longer the story goes, the less compelling it becomes.
The movie begins with a misstep. With a stranger, a girl boards a train to an unidentified destination and never removes her blindfold? Let us agree to put our disbelief on hold. Beyond that, you are treated to a few stunning scenery and enjoyable music. Regretfully, that's all there is to it.
The movie begins as an unusual love story, co-written by Mansi Bagla, who also shares screenplay and dialogue credits with Niranjan Iyenger and Santosh Singh. Only to have the welcome breath of fresh air turn stale in a matter of minutes. The narrative has no substance. There are no dramatic moments that typically enhance traditional love stories. There is no spark. You keep hoping for that one redeeming moment—that one emotional beat—but it never comes.
The first half is spent in hope. It also starts the second one. However, there aren't even any breathtaking landscapes to capture your attention. All that remains is a love tale with no peaks, no excitement, and no suspense.
Report card for performance
Despite the fact that her role (or the plot) doesn't give her much to work with, Shanaya Kapoor delivers a self-assured debut. Vikrant Massey is generally trustworthy, but his performance is only average. As a visually impaired individual, he had the potential for subtlety, but he doesn't quite achieve it. As Shanaya's other love interest, Abhinav, Zain Khan Durrani is fine.
Vishal Mishra wrote the calming music, which is likely the only thing that really works.
Ultimately, Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan comes across as a love letter that never arrived. It attempts to pull at your heartstrings but ultimately falls flat. The picture blindly seeks a spark that never quite ignites, leaving you wishing it had recognized its own promise more clearly.
