Your Blood Work Isn’t Enough—Cardiologist’s Top Test for Insulin Resistance
4 months ago | 5 Views
Doctors often recommend a blood sugar test to check if we are at risk of diabetes or whether our blood sugar levels are healthy. However, your blood sugar test does not reveal the entire picture, according to Dr. Alok Chopra, MBBS and MD (cardiology).
The cardiologist issued a caution in an Instagram post uploaded on July 7, advising that blood sugar levels might seem "normal" even when insulin is out of control and silently doing damage. "Your blood sugar could be 'normal', but what about your insulin?" he penned. It's time to go deeper. Prevention begins right now. He recommended the following course of action instead:
How to tell whether you are insulin resistant
In place of a standard blood sugar test, the cardiologist recommended having a "comprehensive insulin response test" performed. "It detects insulin resistance years before your blood sugar does," Dr. Chopra emphasized, adding that the insulin response test reveals how your body truly reacts to sugar.
What happens if you identify insulin problems early? According to the cardiologist, you can avoid:
mind fog
There is an energy dip following meals.
Stubborn abdominal fat
Burnout
Diabetes of Type 2
Signs of PCOS
When should the insulin response test be performed? According to the doctor: "If you feel tired after eating, have PCOS, a hormonal imbalance, or have a family history of diabetes, you should ask your doctor about an insulin response test."
Understanding Insulin Health
Dr. Chopra advised checking these indicators to get a sense of your insulin health:
Insulin During Fasting: 2–5 µIU/mL
Insulin after meals (1-2 hours): < 30 µIU/mL
0.5 to 2.0 ng/mL of C-peptide (fasting)
"The C-peptide reveals the amount of insulin your body is making and if it's making up for resistance. Although the C-peptide is rarely tested, it is one of the most reliable methods for determining whether your pancreas is working excessively to produce insulin. The cardiologist said that when combined with fasting insulin, it provides a clear indication of your metabolic health, even before your blood glucose levels rise.
