The liver produces glutathione, an antioxidant, organically. It is regarded as the "king of antioxidants" and is necessary for optimum health. Dermatologists told HT Lifestyle in an interview that there are certain precautions one should take when using glutathione supplements to support the immune system, detoxify, and perhaps slow the aging process in order to protect one's health.

Glutathione, a potent antioxidant produced by your liver, is essential for detoxifying chemicals and shielding your cells from harm, according to Dr. Soma Sarkar, a dermatologist and co-founder of SkinBB. "Glutathione is a medicine that aids as an antioxidant," Dr. Sarkar advises if you're thinking about using glutathione supplements. The liver is where it is metabolized, therefore the liver's condition should be healthy. As a result, it is necessary to determine whether the patient (who is using glutathione) has any liver issues.

Don't drink and smoke

"Second, it is important to determine if the patient is taking a lot of medications for any liver disease or liver dysfunction," she said. "Those with G6PD deficiency must be aware of these factors." Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is an enzyme that is essential for the maintenance of healthy red blood cells, but people with G6PD deficiency have an inherited condition where their bodies do not produce enough of it.

The absence of enzymes does not cause a straightforward decrease in the body's glutathione level, according to Dr. Sarkar. Enzymes are involved in the production and metabolism of glutathione. She emphasized the need to recognize that using glutathione does not excuse one from lifestyle management.

For example, she said that glutathione alone cannot be used to "wash out" the negative consequences of smoking or excessive alcohol consumption. Although glutathione helps your body's natural detoxification mechanisms and antioxidant defenses, it does not eliminate the necessity for good lifestyle choices, according to her.

When patients are on glutathione, because it's an antioxidant, people tend to overlook the need for lifestyle management, according to Dr Sarkar. They believe I can smoke and drink since I'm using glutathione. Remember that a balance must be struck. You won't experience any positive effects from glutathione if your lifestyle isn't healthy.

It's best to stay away from junk food

"Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that the body produces naturally," said Dr. Shareefa Chause, a dermatologist at Mumbai's Dr. Shareefa's Skin Care Clinic. It is frequently used as a supplement to promote liver health, improve skin, boost immunity, and lower oxidative stress. Additionally, it may have anti-aging and skin-brightening effects. By fighting free radicals and aiding in the body's detoxification process, this antioxidant eventually contributes to general health.

Although glutathione is considered, Dr. Chause cautioned against certain practices to maximize its effects: "People should only take it after consulting the doctor. Don't accept anything only because it has been advertised online. Furthermore, if you are told to take it, stay away from alcohol and smoking, as they might both lower the body's inherent antioxidant levels and impair the supplement's efficacy.

She continued, "It's also best to avoid junk food, processed sugars, and fried items, which can increase oxidative stress, if you are taking this supplement. When taking glutathione, always consult your doctor because some medications, such chemotherapy drugs or anti-psychotics, may interact. Don't forget sun protection if you're using it for a glowing complexion. Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher, or use moisturizer as directed by the professional.
