If you maintain your toothbrush too close to the toilet, you may be putting it in danger of dangerous germs without knowing it. In his Instagram post from February 16, Dr. Samuel Choudhury, a doctor, discusses the potential for this widespread practice to be unhygienic and offers useful advice on how to properly store your toothbrush in order to maintain its cleanliness and protect your oral health.

In his caption, Dr. Choudhury wrote, "Did you know that flushing the toilet can send bacteria flying up to 6 feet in the air? If your toothbrush is chilling next to your toilet, you might be brushing with more than just toothpaste!"

"When we flush the toilet, a lot of particles are released into the air," he added. A survey conducted in a dormitory revealed that 60% of toothbrushes had feces (poop) on them, which is not unexpected.

And if you believe that keeping your toothbrush in a covered case protects it, think again. "Research shows that keeping a toothbrush in a closed container actually increases bacterial growth," he continued. "These containers trap moisture and create the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive."

Maintaining a clean and safe toothbrush

Among the crucial advice Dr. Choudhury provided on maintaining a clean and healthy toothbrush are the following:

Keep it upright to ensure that water drains effectively and the bristles dry more quickly.

Keep it far from the toilet (preferably at least 6 feet!) in a dry, well-ventilated spot.

Close the toilet cover before flushing to stop the spread of germs into the atmosphere.

Get a new toothbrush or brush head every three to four months.

Stay away from closed containers because they hold moisture and foster bacterial growth.
