Monsoon and Cataract Surgery: Top Surgeon Busts 5 Common Myths
5 months ago | 5 Views
A common eye ailment that usually manifests in older adults, cataracts cause foggy or hazy vision. It happens when proteins in the lens of the eye break down and clump together, making it difficult for light to reach the retina in a clear manner.
However, myths surrounding cataract surgery frequently prevent people from getting help when they need it. Dr Supriya Sriganesh, an ophthalmologist, cataract and refractive surgeon at Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital in Bangalore.
Myth 1: The cataract needs to develop before surgery is possible
The truth is that this is totally incorrect. In reality, it may be quite hazardous to let the cataract ripen. The optimal time for surgery is during the initial stages, like stage 2. The surgery becomes much more difficult if you let the cataract develop to the point that your eyesight is significantly compromised. After surgery, a mature cataract has a higher risk of instability, retinal problems, and glaucoma. Therefore, never let the cataract develop. When the decline in vision starts to have an impact on your everyday life, it's the perfect moment to get cataract surgery. If your vision is hazy and it's affecting your daily activities, it's time to have the treatment. There is no need to allow it to get any worse.
Myth 2: During the rainy or monsoon season, cataract surgery is impossible.
Fact: This is an ancient idea from the period when cataract treatment was a significant, hands-on operation with big incisions and a lengthy rehabilitation. Laser technology is frequently used in contemporary cataract surgery, which is a bloodless, painless, and quick operation. There are no seasonal limits, and recovery is quick. At any time of the year, whether it be during the monsoon, summer, or winter, you may have cataract surgery with no risk.

Myth 3: Lens implantation is optional
In reality, some patients question if a lens needs to be implanted following cataract surgery. It is really necessary. The eye operates similarly to a camera, with the lens concentrating light onto the retina in the same way that a camera lens focuses light onto film or a sensor. The light entering the eye cannot be concentrated without a lens, which leads to hazy eyesight. Following cataract surgery, it is necessary to insert an intraocular lens (IOL) in order to have clear vision.
Myth 4: After surgery, cataracts can return
The clouding of the eye's natural lens is known as a cataract. The lens is extracted during the operation and replaced with an artificial lens that is implanted into the native lens capsule (a natural pouch inside the eye). A disorder known as posterior capsular opacification (PCO), in which certain cells develop on the rear of the lens capsule, can cause blurry eyesight in some individuals a few years after surgery. The cataract isn't returning. A straightforward, one-time laser polishing procedure can easily treat it and restore clear vision. Myth 5: It is possible to replace the lens that has been implanted at a later time
Truth: The idea that the lens placed during cataract surgery can be changed afterwards is another fallacy. Actually, the artificial lens is implanted forever. It is not standard practice to remove or replace a lens once it has been implanted in the eye. The lens may only need to be removed or replaced in unusual circumstances, such as lens displacement or complications, and even then, there are potential dangers. Consequently, selecting the appropriate lens is a critical choice. It is determined by the patient's visual requirements and way of life, including whether they would rather have near vision, distance vision, or are comfortable wearing glasses. Before making the best and long-lasting decision, the patient should discuss these factors with the patient.
