Brain-Eating Amoeba: How It Spreads and the First Symptoms

The death of a Texas woman from a brain-eating amoeba infection after using tap water from the water faucet of an RV for nasal irrigation was discussed by neurosurgeon Dr. Betsy Grunch on Instagram on July 8. Primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rare and fatal brain infection, is caused by the amoeba known as Naegleria fowleri.

Source of infection

Dr. Grunch's Instagram post gave specifics about 'Naegleria fowleri aka brain-eating amoeba' and said, "This case is tragic —but awareness can save lives." She continued, "Naegleria fowleri is the brain-eating amoeba that causes Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM)." After bathing in warm freshwater, it enters through the nose and makes its way to the brain via the olfactory nerve. After arriving, it quickly destroys brain tissue."

Symptoms and prevention tips

"Early symptoms resemble meningitis: fever, headache, nausea, stiff neck," Dr. Grunch stated. However, neurological deterioration begins in a matter of days, manifesting as disorientation, convulsions, and coma. PAM is almost always lethal if not recognized and treated promptly.

Treatment, according to Dr. Grunch, consists of "IV and intrathecal amphotericin B, miltefosine, dexamethasone, and hypothermia protocols. There are a few survivors, but survival is rare and depends on immediate diagnosis."

The amoeba may usually be found in warm freshwater habitats such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs. As a result, Dr. Grunch advised that you stay away from warm freshwater areas that are known to be possible habitats for the amoeba when swimming or participating in water sports. In addition, she advised that you utilize distilled or sterile water for nasal irrigation rather than tap water, which could be polluted.

These are some of the preventative measures that Dr. Grunch recommended:

Refrain from forcing water into the nose.

In neti pots, use distilled or boiled water.

Refrain from swimming in warm freshwater when the summer heat is at its highest.
