Poonam Dhillon, an actress, recalled how the late director Yash Chopra responded when she once presented him with a film concept based on Daniel Steele's novel, The Promise. The movie, titled Yeh Vaada Raha (1982), was later directed by Kapil Kapoor. Poonam said that he turned down the movie because he thought the Indian public would not like the idea of Hema Malini turning into Zeenat Aman. The plot of the story has the lead female performers changing after a cosmetic operation.

Poonam Dhillon described Yash Chopra's rejection of her idea for the narrative of Yeh Vaada Raha.

When she was in Japan, Poonam remembered reading the book. She informed Yash Chopra about the plan when she got back to India. I informed Yashji. I told Yashji, "Ek bohot achchi kahani maini padhi hai (I have read a good story). I think it's a lovely story". "I don't read books, you give it to Pam, she'll read it and tell me," he replied. As a result, I said, "Okay." Pam ji read it maybe once more in a day, though. It was a quick read. She also told him about the topic. And I was thrilled to anticipate his response. I thus replied, "Pam ji informed you of it; Yash ji, you read it." "Yes, yes. But this movie won't be accepted by our Hindi audience," he said. "Why Yash ji, it's such a good story, you know, romantic story, everything," Poonam responded.

Yash Chopra Rejected 'Yeh Vaada Raha' Said, 'Who'll Accept If Hema Becomes Zeenat', Reveals Poonam

According to Yash, the tale had a flaw that made it unsuitable for Hindi speakers. "He said, acha ek baat bta. Who would accept it if Hema Malini became Zeenat Aman? (Please tell me one thing. Who will accept if Hema Malini transforms into Zeenat Aman? He put an end to my fantasy right there and then, and the tale came to a conclusion. Poonam said that Chopra was not going to make it.

Later, Poonam understood that Yash Chopra was accurate in his prediction of the audience's response.

The producers of Yeh Vaada Raha approached Poonam with a similar tale years later, and she immediately agreed. But after the film's dismal box office results, Poonam remembered Yash's opinions on the plot. "And certainly, it turned out to be true enough. Plastic surgery was not as well received in those days. The entire face has transformed, and the individual remains the same, etc. Therefore, she continued, "It didn't function well at that time."

Regarding Yeh Vaada Raha

Rishi Kapoor, Tina, Rakhee, and Shammi Kapoor were among the cast members of Yeh Vaada Raha. Through the use of plastic surgery, two actresses (Poonam and Tina) played the main female role in the first Hindi movie.
