In the midst of a high-octane international cricket series, the Indian women's cricket team took a moment away from the pitch for spiritual solace. The team, affectionately known as the 'Women in Blue,' paid a visit to the revered Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on Monday. This visit came just ahead of the second match in their ongoing five-match T20 International series against Sri Lanka.

Cricket, in India, is often seen as a blend of talent, hard work, and good fortune, and this pilgrimage reflects the team's desire to seek divine blessings as they look to maintain their winning momentum.

A Spiritual Pause in a Busy Schedule

Visakhapatnam, or Vizag, which is hosting the series, is not just a coastal city but also home to this ancient temple, a prominent pilgrimage centre in the region. The visit provided the players with a brief yet meaningful spiritual interlude amid their packed international schedule.

A strong contingent of the Indian squad was present for the prayers. Star players like vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, captain Harmanpreet Kaur, pace spearhead Renuka Singh, and dynamic opener Shafali Verma were among those who sought darshan (blessings). They were joined by other teammates, including Amarpreet Kaur, Vaishnavi Sharma, Kranti Gowd, and Sri Charani. Adding a unique touch to the occasion, two of the match officials, Umpires DS Lakshmi and Brinda Rathi, also accompanied the team to the temple.

Traditional Welcome and Sacred Rituals

Upon their arrival, the cricketers were greeted with a traditional reception by the temple authorities. The officials extended customary temple honours, welcoming the sporting heroes in a manner befitting the occasion.

The team offered their prayers to the presiding deity, participating in special rituals within the sanctum sanctorum. They also embraced the sacred Kappasthambham within the temple premises, a ritual deeply rooted in local tradition. Following the completion of the darshan, Vedic scholars performed Vedic blessings for the players. As a mark of honour and respect, the temple authorities felicitated the cricketers with sacred silk garments and presented them with prasadam. The players expressed their sincere hopes for the continued success of the nation and sought divine favour for their future victories in the international arena.

Building on Early Momentum

The spiritual visit comes as the Indian team looks to solidify their position in the T20I series. The Women in Blue kicked off the series with a dominant performance, securing a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over their neighbours in the first T20I. With the team now spiritually recharged, they are poised to take on the Sri Lankan side in the second T20I, aiming to double their lead and take a significant step towards clinching the series. The blend of professional preparation and traditional spiritual grounding is a testament to the team's holistic approach to competing at the highest level.
