Ultra Media & Entertainment Group, the rights holder for Guru Dutt's film collection, has started discussing a massive biography of the late, great filmmaker with well-known filmmakers. In addition to the biography, the manufacturing industry intends to convert some of Dutt's well-received movies into online series.

Outside of movies, the centennial of Guru Dutt

In addition to these events, there will be other events to celebrate the centennial year of the filmmaker. Guru Dutt, a trailblazer in Hindi film, is most famous for his pioneering works like Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) and Pyaasa (1957). The influence he had on future generations of filmmakers and moviegoers was not diminished by his brief career.

Enthusiasm for collaboration with passionate filmmakers

Rajat Agrawal, the COO and Director of Ultra, said he was excited about the prospect of collaborating with producers and a modern filmmaker who is a Guru Dutt fan. He admitted that biopics often present a difficulty since they have to capture a person's greatness and achievements.

Agrawal has said in an interview with Mid Day that discussions are still ongoing with two filmmakers about the possibility of producing a biography and online series. Two well-known filmmakers have spoken with him about the possibility of creating a documentary about his life and adapting his films for the internet. They can delve into further detail once they have a more solid strategy. He stated that they are also in contact with his family.

Guru Dutt might be played by Vicky Kaushal

Despite having no official word on the casting, Agrawal thinks Vicky Kaushal would be ideal in the major role. Choosing a single actor to portray Dutt would be difficult for him due to the abundance of talent, but he is confident that Kaushal can express the emotional complexity of the role.

Ultra premiered restored versions of Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) at this month's Cannes Film Festival in 2025. As part of a yearlong celebration of the centennial of the filmmaker's birth, his movies will be rereleased in Indian theaters following the exhibition.

Preserving the original aesthetic with a modern touch

Agrawal stated that all of his films have been brought back to their original black and white formats in order to preserve the same retro feel. They are, however, thinking about including color in a few songs in order to see how the audience reacts. A number of well-known filmmakers will curate displays and take part in panel discussions on his lasting impact.
