Varun Grover Reveals Stark Pay Gap With Farhan Akhtar, Explains Exit From TV Writing

In a recent interview, filmmaker-screenwriter Varun Grover discussed his career in the entertainment sector. Although he is most known for writing films such as Masaan, Superboys of Malegao, and, most recently, Homebound, his career actually started with writing for Indian television. When discussing his experiences, Varun brought up an event that led him to give up his career in television.

Varun discussed his experience working in television industry

Varun has contributed to comedy programs such as The Great Indian Comedy Show and Ranvir Vinay Aur Kaun. But writing for Oye! Farhan Akhtar's celebrity talk show, It's Friday!, made him reconsider his career in television. In an interview with Lallantop, Varun said it was while Oye! was playing. He realized it was Friday, and the performer hadn't added much value to his written work.

He also learned about the vast disparity in income between authors and actors.

Following Farhan's performance, why did he leave?

I also learned for the first time how much money actors make performing in shows like that. I didn't think the gap would be this large, even if I did have some notion of it before then. I wasn't sure if the gap was significant, though, until I learned about it, and someone might have informed me about it simply to irritate me. Varun told me that he was receiving ₹45 lakh every episode, whereas my pay was only ₹45,000.

Additionally, he discussed the magnitude of the production, highlighting how opulent the set was. “The film was made at Yash Raj Studio. It was an excellent, pricey set. If I had taken one of those glittering balls hanging there every day, my daily ₹45,000 would have been taken care of. "I've never seen such a stunning set before," Varun joked.
