Valerie Mahaffey, the Emmy-winning star of Desperate Housewives, Young Sheldon, and Dead to Me, passed away on Friday. According to The Hollywood Reporter, citing her publicist Jillian Roscoe, she passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 71.

After a struggle with cancer, Valerie passed away. Joseph Kell, her husband, and their daughter, Alice, remain behind. "America has lost one of its most endearing actresses, and I have lost the love of my life," Joseph said in a statement. Echo 3, which aired on Apple TV+, was the last time she was seen.
On Valerie's career as an actress in television series
Valerie started her career as an actress on Broadway, where she performed from 1976 to 1984. The soap operas The Doctors (1979–80) and Tales of the Unexpected (1984) also featured her. In addition to Cheers, Big Sky, Wings, Seinfeld, and The Mindy Project, she was also featured in other TV series.
On Desperate Housewives from 2006 to 2007, she played Alma Hodge, who was formerly married to Kyle MacLachlan's character Orson Hodge. From 2017 to 2020, she also played the part of teacher Victoria MacElroy in Young Sheldon. In Dead to Me (2019-22) on Netflix, she portrayed Lorna Harding.
In several well-known programs, such as Boston Legal (2008), Hannah Montana (2010), and Grey's Anatomy (2013), Valerie had minor roles.

For her role as the lead supporting actress in The Doctors, she was nominated for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1980. For her performance in Northern Exposure, she received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1992.
Valerie's filmmaking career
Additionally, Valerie had roles in films like Senior Trip and Women of the House (1995), Jungle 2 Jungle (1997), Seabiscuit (2003), Summer Eleven (2010), Jack and Jill (2011), Sully and No Pay, Nudity (2016), and, most notably, French Exit (2020).
