On Tuesday evening, the producers of Lokesh Kanagaraj's Rajinikanth-starring Coolie unveiled a new song titled Powerhouse. If the lyrical video is any indication, the song, which was written by Anirudh Ravichander, appears to be playing during a crucial battle sequence in the movie. Additionally, admirers discovered a discreet homage to the popular American television series Breaking Bad in the tune.

The Coolie powerhouse pays tribute to Breaking Bad

The song by Powerhouse includes music by Anirudh, lyrics by Arivu, and singing by both of them. In the 3:28 minute song, Rajinikanth is seen battling his way through a horde of thugs. With the exception of one segment towards the conclusion, the film is all black and white with gold highlights.

The film's team hosted a promotion event for it in Hyderabad, where Anirudh made his debut. The phrases "say my name" and "goddamn right" in the song grabbed everyone's attention. Soon after, Breaking Bad viewers understood that these phrases are spoken by Bryan Cranston's character, Walter White. Videos superimposing the songs over scenes from the program soon appeared on X (previously Twitter) from a lot of viewers.

One fan wrote, “Coo coo coolie power house ehh "SAY My NAME" Ennaikum Korayaadha Mouse’eh "GOD DAMM RIGHT". Blended so well breaking bad dialogue into a banger like it’s part of the beat, peak crossover fr.” Another thought Anirudh ‘cooked’. Some fans also wrote, “Coolie #Powerhouse ft. Heisenberg from Breaking Bad. SAY MY NAME!” while posting their fan edits.

When Ilaiyaraaja sent legal notice over music

Following the announcement teaser last May, Ilaiyaraaja filed a legal notice against Sun Pictures, the producers, for using a piece of his song Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa in the 1983 film Thanga Magan. He said that he was not paid a royalty for the song's usage and accused Lokesh of taking advantage of him. Whether the song will be featured in the movie is still unknown.

Kalanithi Maran's Sun Pictures produced Coolie, which was directed by Lokesh. The cast includes Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Aamir Khan, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, Monisha Blessy, and Kaali Venkat. On August 14, it will be shown in cinemas, where it will compete against War 2 starring Jr NTR and Hrithik Roshan.
