It's possible that Mohammed Shami will be back in the game next month, after being left out of the Test series against England. Having experienced setbacks due to injuries and a poor string of performances since his most recent international match in March 2025, the seasoned Indian pacer has now been selected to Bengal's extended list of 50 potential players for the upcoming domestic season.

The Duleep Trophy, which is slated to begin on August 28, might be the venue for Shami's comeback if he is chosen

Shami's experience is invaluable at the age of 34: he has played 64 Tests, 108 ODIs, 25 T20Is, and his position in the pace history of Indian cricket is still strong. Earlier this year, he participated in India's successful Champions Trophy campaign, where he shared the top wicket-taker award for India with fellow teammate Varun Chakravarthy after collecting nine wickets in five games. But despite his outstanding campaign appearances, Shami had a terrible Indian Premier League season with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Shami's performance was subpar, as he only managed six wickets in nine innings while maintaining a concerning economy rate of 11.23, and the team placed sixth overall, missing the playoffs. A veteran player seeking to compete for the Test series wouldn't have made such a statement.

Shami was not chosen for India's high-profile five-test series in England after that time. "The medical folks have informed us that he has been ruled out of this series," chief selector Ajit Agarkar said. He has been attempting to get in shape for the series, but he has had a setback in the past week, and he has had some MRIs performed. It's unfortunate that he wouldn't have been able to compete in five tests. We would always select a bowler like him.

Last year, Shami recovered from his injury

A combination of factors, including an ankle injury that required surgery in early 2024 and ongoing knee pain, led to his absence. For Shami, a return to the home front via Bengal and maybe East Zone may not be a spectacular comeback, but it's an opportunity to show that his body and rhythm can still endure a long season.
