Taylor Swift’s Masters Battle: How Much Did She Pay Shamrock Capital to Reclaim Her Albums from Scooter Braun?

Taylor Swift announced on Friday that she has successfully purchased the master recordings of her first six albums—Taylor Swift (2006), Fearless (2008), Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), 1989 (2014), and Reputation (2017)—from Shamrock Capital. The Grammy-winning artist wrote in a moving, handwritten letter published on her website, "All of the music I've ever made now belongs to me."

This brings to a conclusion a well-publicized ownership battle between Swift, Scooter Braun, and Shamrock Capital. Following Scooter Braun's $330 million acquisition of Big Machine Label Group (BMLG) in 2019, the "Love Story" singer had been attempting to get her music back under her control. In November 2020, Braun then sold the masters to Shamrock Capital for $405 million.

What price did Taylor Swift pay for the masters?

Although the specifics of the agreement were kept under wraps, Billboard reported, quoting sources, that Swift paid a sum that was around the same as the $360 million that Shamrock paid in 2021.

"We are delighted with this outcome and are so happy for Taylor," Shamrock Capital said in a statement. Taylor Swift began re-recording and publishing her first six albums in an effort to reclaim ownership of her music years after that.

Scooter Braun and Taylor Swift

Braun's Ithaca Holdings paid $330 million in June 2019 to acquire BMLG, which included Swift's masters. Swift stated she wasn't told about the transaction and that she was unfairly denied the chance to purchase her masters.

Braun sold the masters to Shamrock Capital for $405 million in November 2020. Swift claimed that Braun insisted that Shamrock refrain from contacting her until the agreement was finalized and that she declined an equity partnership with Shamrock because Braun would still benefit from it.

The pop musician began re-recording four of her six albums in November 2020, releasing Taylor's Version editions that surpassed the originals.

Taylor Swift has released new songs in between re-recordings, such as "The Tortured Poets Department," which was unveiled during the 2024 Grammys and made available during her record-breaking tour.
