Suniel Shetty Says Star Kids Are Under Fire Constantly: ‘It’s a Critic-Driven Era’
4 months ago | 5 Views
Bollywood has always been a mix of legacy and new talent, with star kids often entering the industry under the spotlight. However, veteran actor Suniel Shetty believes that while star kids have opportunities, they also face immense pressure to prove themselves in today’s critical environment. In a recent interview, Shetty shared his thoughts on the challenges faced by star kids, emphasizing that success in the film industry demands relentless hard work—regardless of family connections.
The Double-Edged Sword of Privilege
Suniel Shetty, whose own daughter Athiya Shetty is a Bollywood actress, acknowledges that star kids have an advantage when it comes to initial opportunities. Doors open faster for them due to their family name, but Shetty insists that this privilege comes with heightened expectations.
"Yes, star kids get a launchpad, but they also face more scrutiny. The audience today is unforgiving—they won’t accept you just because of your surname. You have to deliver," Shetty remarked.
This perspective highlights a crucial shift in Bollywood. Earlier, star kids could rely on their lineage for long-term success. However, with social media and critics dissecting every performance, talent and hard work have become non-negotiable.
The Pressure to Prove Themselves
Shetty pointed out that star kids often work under a microscope, where every move is analyzed. Unlike outsiders who can make mistakes and learn quietly, star kids face immediate backlash if they underperform.
"The pressure is intense. If an outsider fails, they get another chance. But if a star kid’s film flops, the criticism is brutal," he explained.
This constant scrutiny pushes star kids to work harder, refine their craft, and choose roles wisely. Actors like Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor, despite their famous last names, had to consistently prove their mettle to gain respect in the industry.
Hard Work Trumps Legacy
Shetty emphasized that while connections may help in getting a foot in the door, longevity in Bollywood depends solely on dedication. He cited examples of star kids who have thrived due to their relentless work ethic.
"Look at Shahid Kapoor or Hrithik Roshan—they didn’t just ride on their family names. They trained, they struggled, and they earned their place," he said.
This sentiment resonates with the changing dynamics of Bollywood, where audiences now prioritize talent over lineage. The rise of OTT platforms has further leveled the playing field, giving equal opportunities to outsiders and industry insiders alike.
