On June 23, at a board meeting that was both symbolic and strategically important, Sona Comstar officially announced a period of introspection and renewal. The mobility technology business, which has established itself as one of India's leading worldwide auto component companies, paid tribute to its late Chairman, Sunjay Kapur, by bestowing upon him the posthumous title of Chairman Emeritus.

Just weeks after Kapur's unexpected death during a polo game in the UK, a loss that shocked the automotive and business sectors alike, the announcement was made.

Thinking about the person who rewired Sona Comstar

For about twenty years, Sunjay Kapur was involved with the business. After his father, Dr. Surinder Kapur, passed away in 2015, during a time of financial hardship for the company, he took over as Managing Director. The firm underwent structural changes in the years that followed, including a merger with Comstar and a partnership with Blackstone, both of which signaled a move towards electric mobility technologies.

Since 2019, Kapur has served as Chairman and has overseen the company's growth into a number of international and emerging markets, such as sensors and software. The Board's action to name him Chairman Emeritus is a formal acknowledgment of the influence he had on the course of the firm during his tenure.

Jeffrey Mark Overly named as the new chairman

Following the tribute, the Board named Jeffrey Mark Overly as the new Chairman. Overly has previously worked at Blackstone, Kohler, General Motors, and Delphi, and he has expertise in operations, manufacturing, and private equity. He has been an independent director on the company's board since 2021.

Given the change in leadership, his appointment is well-timed and appears to be made with the goal of ensuring continuity. In recent years, Overly has been heavily involved in board business, and his promotion will probably influence the company's strategic and operational plan going forward.

The board includes Priya Sachdev Kapur

Priya Sachdev Kapur, the wife of the late Sunjay Kapur, has also been appointed by the Board as an Additional Non-Executive Director, pending shareholder approval. Previously, she worked in the investment banking sector and was involved in fashion retail and private investment endeavors.

Her experience in a variety of fields gives her a fresh perspective to the board. She has also participated in charitable initiatives, particularly in the areas of education, sustainability, and assistance for those with impairments.
