Shilpa Shirodkar Opens Up About Being Called ‘Panauti’ After Her First Two Films Were Shelved
6 months ago | 5 Views
Shilpa Shirodkar's early years in Bollywood were characterized by failures and harsh labels, as not every actor has an easy entry into the film industry. The actress, who is most famous for her performances in Kishen Kanhaiya and Hum, was open about being called unlucky in a Zoom interview after two of her debut films failed to come to fruition before production could begin.
Shilpa Shirodkar remembers her dream debut being canceled
With filmmaker Sawan Kumar Tak's Sautan Ki Beti, which was supposed to be a dream debut in 1986, Shilpa remembered that it never saw the light. "On the 9th of August, I did my Mahurat at Filmalaya Studios. It was among the largest launch sites. I starred in the title role of Sawan ji's film Sautan Ki Beti. It might have been no larger than that. However, after two years, there was still nothing going on. "I'm not producing the movie," Sawan ji told her. "If you get anything from outside, take it."
Afterward, her mother contacted Gautam Rajadhyaksha, a photographer, who put her in touch with Boney Kapoor and Surinder Kapoor for a movie. She claimed that Boney's father liked her and offered to cast her alongside Sanjay Kapoor in a movie named Jungle. However, they abandoned that plan and chose to create Prem instead, who wasn't the right fit for the part. She lost control of that movie as well.
People used to call Shilpa a panauti, she remembered
After industry insiders began to whisper about her series of missed opportunities, a kind stranger contacted Mithun Chakraborty, according to Shilpa. "'Dada, this girl's two films have been shelved and now the industry is calling her all sorts of names—please launch her,' he said." I was told that I was cursed, a panauti. My major films were always put on hold. However, these factors are irrelevant if you have a solid family support system.
Ultimately, Shilpa played a blind girl in Ramesh Sippy's Bhrashtachar, which starred Mithun Chakraborty and Rekha, marking her acting debut in 1989. As a result of the movie, she gained fame and quickly landed roles in successful films like Kishen Kanhaiya (1990), Trinetra (1991), and Hum (1991). Her filmography would eventually feature well-known works like Mrityudand, Bewafa Sanam, Gopi Kishan, Pehchaan, Aankhen, and Khuda Gawah.
