Parag and Shefali had been married for 11 years but had no children. The actress told India.com in an interview in 2020 that her choice to adopt was "a very brave decision, especially in the culture that we belong to." Why not have your own is the immediate response. However, from the moment I was 10–12 years old and realized the concept of adoption, this has always been something I wanted to do. I thought the notion was really lovely.

She said that she started receiving all sorts of inquiries about having children after 4–5 years of marriage to Parag, which she considered to be natural. "But Parag couldn't comprehend my emotions," she said, adding that she wished to adopt a baby girl. For a major choice like adoption, it was essential that Parag and I be in agreement. It took a while. My time away in the Bigg Boss house made me and him consider starting a family, I believe. We talked to our families when I came out. The support of Parag's family was tremendous. My parents, though, are still trying to come to terms with the choice.

Because of the numerous rules in the nation, such as authorization checks, paperwork, and counseling, the road to adoption is not an easy one, according to Shefali.

Parag drove Shefali to Bellevue Multispecialty Hospital in suburban Mumbai on Friday night. A hospital insider told news agency PTI that "she was brought to the hospital around 11.15 pm (Friday) and the on-duty doctor pronounced her dead on arrival." The Mumbai Police stated that the actor's body has been sent to Cooper Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the cause of death, despite certain accounts claiming that she passed away from a cardiac arrest.
