SC Clears Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life for Karnataka Release, but Distributor Questions Profitability

Although the Supreme Court may have prepared the ground for the late release of Kamal Haasan's film Thug Life in Karnataka, the film's distributor now thinks that it makes no sense. Two weeks ago, the movie was released in theaters all over India.

The release of Thug Life right now is questioned by the Karnataka distributor

Following the Supreme Court's decision to permit the release of the Mani Ratnam-directed film, which was opposed in the state in response to Haasan's contentious remarks about the Kannada language, Venkatesh Kamalakar, the distributor, made his statement the day after.

In response to a petition submitted by a Bengaluru resident requesting the film's release in Karnataka, the Supreme Court ruled on June 17 that the state is responsible for making sure a film is available in theaters after it has received a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). In other words, the movie may now be released in the state right away. Nevertheless, the distributor is unsure of the commercial rationale for doing so, considering how well it has been received throughout India since it was first released.

Since Haasan's remarks about the Kannada language harmed the feelings of Kannadigas, it also makes no sense to release the movie, according to Kamalakar, the film's distributor in Karnataka, who spoke to PTI. "However, the primary reason for not releasing the picture right now is that it is not a wise business choice. Kamalakar said that his prior picture, Indian 2, did not perform well in Karnataka either.

Haasan's Vikram performed well in Karnataka in 2022, according to the distributor, but he lacks a devoted following there that would support him regardless of the movie. "The success of his movies depends on their quality." Most people do not think Thug Life is a decent movie. In Karnataka, where Kamalakar distributes primarily high-budget Tamil movies, he claims that it is simply too dangerous.

The distributor had previously made an advance payment of around ₹9 crore, according to industry sources. Without disclosing the sum, Kamalakar acknowledged that he did pay an advance payment, but he said he does not foresee any issues in getting it back. "It's not our fault. Given how things turned out, which theatre owner will be willing to screen the movie when there is no profit, he questioned.

Film is still opposed by several organizations that support the Kannada language

In the meantime, in spite of the Supreme Court's order, several pro-Kannada groups in Bengaluru have reportedly urged the cinemas not to screen the movie. The houses of a number of pro-Kannada activists in Bengaluru were given notices by the police on Wednesday. They told the demonstrators that Freedom Park is the only location where they are permitted to demonstrate. However, Praveen Shetty, a prominent opponent of the remark and leader of his own group within the Kannada Rakshana Vedike, had reportedly declined to take accountability for any demonstrations or acknowledge the notice.

Regarding Thug Life

After 37 years, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam reunite in Thug Life, the first time since their legendary partnership in Naayakan. The movie, though, fell short of capturing that old-world charm. The movie "Thug Life" received poor reviews and failed to wow audiences. In two weeks, it has made just 96 crores.
