Roshan Mathew Reveals Hindi Film Experience Transformed His Acting: “I Realized I Was Ignoring the Camera”

Roshan Mathew admits that Hindi films are where he first fell in love with the camera, even if he may think of Malayalam films as his home. The actor, who is well-known for his roles in films like Moothon, Kappela, C U Soon, and Darlings for Hindi audiences, is now enjoying the popularity of his most recent show, Kankhajura. The actor discusses the program in the online media and about his "homecoming" to Hindi.

On Kankhajura

For the first time in his career, Kankhajura saw Roshan play a cunning and manipulative antihero. "It was a lot of fun," he says with a smile, adding, "The primary reason why I was excited to play Ashu, which is his character in Kankhajura, is that I haven't done anything like this." I didn't realize I've never portrayed a character like this before. Especially in Hindi, where everyone knows me as Zulfi from Darlings. I thought it was a pleasant change.

Roshan laughs when asked if his gentle looks and demeanor have held back such parts, saying, "In a visual medium, the visuals are very important. An actor's appearance is a significant factor in casting." Very few individuals are acquainted with us. As a result, everyone has access to this public or interview persona. I'm really happy that Chandan sir (Kankhajura director Chandan Arora) and the crew believed I was capable of doing something like this."

In Hindi, "homecoming"

Roshan made a name for himself in Malayalam movies, but his debut acting role was in the Hindi web series Tanlines, which was available on SonyLIV in 2015. In light of that, does going back to Hindi feel like a homecoming? "It's always felt like that," Roshan said, adding, "My first project in front of the camera, where I actually started having fun with the medium, was Tanlines." I made friends with the camera in large part thanks to Proshit Roy, who directed it. Even though I had made a few Malayalam films, they hadn't been made public. However, I was using the incorrect method to go about it. I was acting like I was on stage and completely disregarding the camera. Proshit altered everything for me, and I'm really grateful to him. So, if you consider it, doing another series in Hindi is a weird sort of homecoming."

Mohit Raina, Sarah Jane Dias, and Trinetra Haldar also appear in Kankhajura. It is now available on SonyLIV.
