Rana Daggubati on Deepika Padukone Leaving Spirit: ‘Choosing Work Hours Is Personal’
5 months ago | 5 Views
Rana Daggubati joined the discussion about set work hours in India's film industry after learning of Deepika Padukone's departure from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit through news. Following this, there was increased discussion regarding the working conditions on film sets, particularly for the leading performers.
Following the rejection of her request for an 8-hour workweek, Deepika, who just had a kid, is said to have quit the project. The situation got worse when Vanga posted a cryptic message on social media in which he claimed that an ex-partner had betrayed trust and played a "dirty PR game." Neither the actor nor the filmmaker identified anyone involved.
With a broader perspective on industry practices, Rana Daggubati joins the conversation
Daggubati gave a composed response in an interview with The Lallantop when asked about the larger context. He emphasized that India is not yet a developed country but rather a developing one. India's economy is probably 186th in the globe when measured by per capita income. He hails from Madras, which was the center of the Telugu film industry. He continued by saying that hundreds more people, along with a large number of families, had uprooted their lives and looked for jobs elsewhere. Consequently, it is a way of life for him, not just a job. Furthermore, Daggubati stated that this varies from project to project and from person to person; there is a lot of variation across states in this regard.
The actor went on to describe the differences in work schedules across various industries, pointing out that, for instance, in Maharashtra, the shift is 12 hours long, while in Telugu, it is only eight hours long. But in Maharashtra, one begins at 9 a.m., whereas in Telugu, they all start at 7 a.m. The distinctiveness of the event, according to Daggubati, is influenced by its location, city, and studio setting. Filming on a set demands more preparation than filming in a studio, which is more conducive to unwinding. As a result, the demands vary from project to project, and this should not be taken as a universal truth; many individuals seem to hold the contrary view.
Rana debunks the notion that actors are made to work long hours
The actor also spoke to the prevalent myth that actors are "forced" to spend lengthy hours on set. He said that this is a genuine career and that people are free to pursue their interests. In other words, this project is entirely up to them, and no one can force them to complete it. According to Daggubati, what really matters to each person is a matter of personal opinion. He did state that some performers merely filmed for four hours, but that was their technique.
In his X (formerly Twitter) tweet, Vanga indirectly suggested a breach of trust even if he didn't mention Deepika by name. "When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith," his message stated. We have an implied NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement). However, by doing so, you have 'DISCLOSED' who you are. Are you a feminist who wants to see a younger actor put down and my tale pushed aside? Filmmaking is my life, and I've dedicated years of strenuous effort to perfecting my art. You didn't understand, and you won't ever grasp it. You'll never understand.
At a time when debates over work-life balance are gaining popularity in the entertainment industry, this incident has emphasized the necessity of having structured regulations governing working hours.
