Rajkummar Rao Jokes About Playing Troubled Small-Town Husbands: Blames It on a ‘Curse’

You've probably seen a meme of Rajkummar Rao attempting to get married if you've been online recently. Although the National Award-winning actor has taken on a variety of roles throughout his career, Reddit believes that he has been playing just one role in recent years—that of a small-town man with marital troubles.
This might have some basis in fact. His character in Stree is well known for attempting to establish a family. He uses his wife's cricketing abilities to live his dream as a failed cricketer in Mr & Mrs Mahi. In the video for Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala, he and Triptii Dimri are newlyweds who are traumatized by the theft of their private video, and in Bhool Chuk Maaf, he is a man trapped in a time loop on the eve of his nuptials. These films are all based in tier-2 cities. Rajkummar discusses all of these "similar" roles that are coming his way so frequently in an exclusive interview with HT.
Rajkummar Rao discusses his movies with marriage themes
"It just happened. Nothing is conscious," the actor chuckles. Rajkummar goes on to say that his experience with weddings on film is not novel. "It's not just now," he says. Because Queen was where the wedding played such a key role in the story, I believe I have a certain affinity for weddings.
Manushi Chhillar, his co-star in Maalik, reminds him that in Queen, it was his character who broke off the nuptials. "I believe it's ussi ka shraap that something always goes wrong at weddings," Rajkummar quips. Either he gets stuck in haldi or makes a video. It's that curse, in my opinion, that's plaguing my character and causing havoc at every wedding. Someone either makes a video of him, or he's stuck in haldi.
Rajkummar quips that his Queen character 'needs redemption' when we imply that he might want to take steps to clear the 'shraap'.
In the action thriller Maalik, Rajkummar will next play a very different role—that of a cruel mobster. Pulkit is the director of the movie, which also stars Manushi Chhillar and Prosenjit Chatterjee and will be released on July 11.
