The 21-year-old winner of Miss Grand International 2024, Rachel Gupta, has been the subject of controversy since she said that she would be giving up the crown. Rachel announced on Instagram on May 28 that she is resigning from her position as Miss Grand International 2024 because of a 'toxic environment and repeated unkept promises' during her tenure. She posted a video of herself on her YouTube account on May 29 with the title "The Truth about Miss Grand International - My Story."

'Sell cheap, low-quality items on TikTok since it generates revenue for them'

Rachel Gupta narrated her experience over the previous seven months in the video, despite the Miss Grand International Organization's account of the incident and claims that Rachel's employment was formally terminated. Rachel leveled severe accusations against the Miss Grand International organizers, claiming that she was confined in a cramped Thai hotel room for a month following her victory, then "locked in a house all day long" with no food or basic necessities, and finally "hounded about her weight all the time."

"They honestly don't care if I live or die," she said. They don't care if I live or die as long as I'm there to grin at their events and maintain my physique as slender as they like. They simply want me to be there, promote them on TikTok Live, attend their events, and make money for them. That's all they want from me; I came to see that I was alone and that they would never, ever support me, and they made us sell. As you guys know, they forced us to sell this low-quality, kitschy stuff on TikTok as if we were sales girls. We do things, we're well respected, we've crowned queens, and women in our nation have careers, but they're making us sell low-quality items on TikTok because it makes them money and you can't say no.

'Their representative started pinching me in different places'

Rachel Additionally, she blasted the group for encouraging unattainable beauty ideals and body shaming her, which contributed to her poor self-esteem and psychological problems. She claimed that she had difficulties providing for her own needs and had trouble maintaining her health and fitness.

“I asked them I need access to a gym because obviously, you have to keep taking care of yourself, like that's the job,” she explained. However, they did not make any such arrangements for me. While they were badgering me and going on about my weight and physique incessantly, I had to beg them for a yoga mat. I recall one occasion when they sent me their representative, who approached me and began to pinch me in various areas while saying things like, "Oh you need to lose weight here, you need to lose weight here." What should I say in response to that? It's really humiliating. It causes you to feel so insignificant and awful. Naturally, I realize that I must maintain my physical condition and stay in form in order to perform my job, but it is so hard when you are confined to a home, basically all day long, and have no access to anything.

Rachel additionally mentioned in the video that during the Miss Grand International 2024 competition, countries could pay for votes, and the group accepted these payments, resulting in unfair competition. She also voiced worries about how the group handles major problems, like a sexual assault case that a previous titleholder reported.

"It's taken a lot of courage to be so open and honest," she wrote in the description of her YouTube video, "but I sincerely hope this helps girls who share the dream I once had." Even if my tale may divide you, I implore you to concentrate on the important concerns. Although I have receipts and screenshots for everything, I am unwilling to go there. Regardless of evidence, those who believe me will do so. I decided to resign based on my integrity and self-respect, even if it's difficult to give back what I worked so hard for. I appreciate you listening to and supporting me.

The 21-year-old model from Jalandhar won the Miss Grand International 2024 competition last year, making her the first Indian to take home the prize.
