The problem of unpaid wages for performers in the television sector has been brought to light by actress Poonam Dhillon. In an interview with news agency ANI, Poonam discussed the challenges that "small-time actors" face in the industry. When discussing the shift over the past 20 years, she mentioned that in the past, actors were paid at the conclusion of the day or month. On the other hand, many television performers are now paid following a '90 days' period.

The challenges encountered by low-level actors, according to Poonam Dhillon

She also discussed how difficult this time is for performers who make a few thousand rupees a day and lack solid contracts or legal protection. "Now, particularly a television actor, receives compensation 90 days following the performance. I'm referring to low-wage, short-term workers who make a few thousand dollars each day and only work two to three days a month. We're not discussing celebrities that make millions or crores of rupees. They receive all of their income from their contracts. "They won't leave their home if they don't get paid," she said.

Additionally, Poonam emphasized the impact that late payments have on actors who have less prominent roles and are only hired for one day. "However, these low-rent actors, who are performing roles such as a chauffeur, waiter, or a lawyer, a doctor, work for just one day and then have to wait ninety days to get paid. They must pay their bills and provide for their fundamental needs since they have kids, families, and obligations, she stated.

Changes over the past several years, according to Poonam

She also mentioned that these performers are expected to commute to locations that are even two hours away and that they are not given a transportation allowance. "And we're not talking about every actor, not the big ones. If necessary, they may seek legal assistance and appear in court. But these actors aren't even under contract. They were previously given money for transportation, such as 300 rupees for travel expenses. They are requesting 500 rupees now, but they are getting nothing. Without a transportation allowance, they are expected to go to locations that may be two hours away, she continued.

Poonam is also the president of the Cine and Television Artists Association (CINTAA).
