Papon’s Daughter Bridges Genres, Singing Ghazals Despite K-pop Fandom

In celebration of World Music Day last Saturday, vocalist Papon captivated the Mumbai crowd with a unique performance that blended Bollywood songs with passionate ghazals. In a two-hour performance at the Shaam-e-Mehfil, the vocalist performed the greatest hits by Jagjit Singh, Ghulam Ali, Farida Khanum, and others. The vocalist shared a personal story with the crowd during the show as well.

On Saturday night, the Shaam-e-Mehfil, hosted by Sachi Entertainment, took place in Mumbai's Shanmukhananda Hall, where Papon began his performance of well-known ghazals with Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho by Jagjit Singh. He extended the microphone out to the audience at the end of the ghazal and invited them to sing along. At the conclusion of the "jugalbandi," Papon said, "I saw my daughter sitting and singing. She hates ghazals. Korean-vorean sunti hai (She listens to KPop). However, she was still singing along. The potency of music is this.

During the following two hours, Papon sang a number of well-known ghazals, sharing anecdotes about them and incorporating some of his own shayari. He also performed a few of his well-known film tunes for the audience of Bollywood lovers, including Kyon, Moh Moh Ke Dhaage, and Jeeyein Kyun.

In a unique rendition of Farida Khanum's Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo, in which he also got the audience to participate, the performance came to an end. However, the vocalist first performed something unique for the audience of more than a thousand people in the hall. He participated in a jugalbandi with the crowd while the auditorium was lit up by the flashlights of cell phones. In a heartfelt tune without lyrics, Papon had the audience sing along, hum along, and croon along.
