Nelson Venkatesan Interview: DNA Marks My Most Mainstream and Entertaining Venture Yet

5 months ago | 5 Views

It may have been two years since the release of director Nelson Venkatesan's most recent movie, Farhana, but the filmmaker claims to have been busy ever since then. In a few months, he became committed to his next picture, DNA, and ever since then, Nelson had been working on the Atharvaa and Nimisha Sajayan starrer up until its release on June 20.

"Therefore, to be honest, I've been really busy writing, photographing, and modifying DNA. Since this is all I want to do, I have no complaints. The moment Farhana was released, I was in a happy place since I immediately started working on my next film and writing," Nelson said to OTTplay a few days before DNA's release.

Nelson Venkatesan, the director of DNA, gave an interview:

DNA is Nelson's most mainstream film to date, following Monster, Oru Naal Koothu, and Farhana. When we ask him what the definition of mainstream is, he replies, "I create movies so that everyone can see them, and I've made all of my films with the concept of it being mainstream. I may not have control of the size of the film."

"A film is considered mainstream if it's closer to a common value or viewpoint." If the tale aligns with your unique personality, as the majority of directors are attempting to accomplish, then that's a good thing. Nelson says that he wants to share stories that are based on his ideas and also match the general public opinion. He says that his goal is not to make hundreds of crores of rupees, but rather to have a large audience watch his films.

In reference to DNA, Nelson asserts that the characters are unique and fresh, and they will stand out from the rest of his oeuvre. "The movie's characters develop emotions, and they are directly proportional. A screenplay's emotional hold should permeate my entire being and accompany me throughout the movie. It's the measuring component for various aspects, from costumes to sound design. They should be an extension of the characters."

According to Nelson, his upbringing has influenced his writing and views of women beyond just DNA. Having been raised by a single mother, the filmmaker further adds that the life events he had seen throughout his childhood have influenced him and his way of thinking, which manifests in his writing and perspective on people.

About casting for DNA, Nelson Venkatesan speaks

The filmmaker is acutely aware that selecting the right cast may either make or ruin a movie. Nelson claims that 50 to 60% of casting is based on physically how they look to how I perceived my characters, which is a combination that cinema has never seen before. I would like to work with talented performers and bring individuals closer to my idea of my characters. Atharvaa and Nimisha joined in that way. Their characters interact in complicated ways, and it's the synergy that keeps changing. The film becomes a holy site where the tale develops throughout months of filming. As the director, I must convey these ideas collectively, and the chemistry between the performers is essential and in line with my writing." Nelson emphasizes that he seeks an unconventional approach to casting and does not want to fall into clichés, but there is no compromise on the caliber of the performance.

Additionally, Nimisha's persona in the movie exhibits a characteristic of a mental illness that is reflected in her DNA. "Yes, there is a small track, but it's not a major thing in the film, which is why I'm not particularly interested in it. I view her as any other average girl, and she is simply one of the colors in our palette. For this reason, I don't jump into it. In the movie, Nimisha's role is just like any other girl, and that is how I approached it.

The director exudes confidence, which has come from the patience and labor of the previous two years, as Nelson asserts that DNA is his loudest and most enjoyable film to date. In conclusion, the director states that he is always writing, and as a screenwriter at heart, Nelson promises that his upcoming film will be more engaging and truthful.
