After a wild premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, which ended with a nine-minute standing ovation and praise in the Un Certain Regard section, director Neeraj Ghaywan is finally catching his breath. He’s taken to Instagram to give credit where it’s due — a lot of it.

In a heartfelt and detailed post, Ghaywan celebrates the success of Homebound. He also highlights the team behind the scenes, giving us a rare look at what goes into making a film. Be prepared for an inspiring story that’s worth following.

“Now that Cannes is behind us, I want to thank everyone involved with our film, Homebound,” Ghaywan begins.

The story started with Basharat Peer’s powerful New York Times article “Taking Amrit Home.” Producer Somen Mishra, who clearly saw talent in the piece, introduced it to Ghaywan and suggested he direct it. Basharat was a big fan from the start.

The next challenge was writing a full screenplay. Ghaywan admits, “Writing a whole feature was hard for me.” That’s when Sumit Roy stepped in. He was officially a story and screenplay consultant but also a lifeline. Ghaywan says Roy did much more than just help with structure. “His presence helped me push through my doubts and dark patches.”

For the dialogue, Ghaywan brought in his longtime friend and fellow writer Varun Grover. Grover is known for clear, emotional words. “He added clarity, style, and finesse to the lines,” Ghaywan wrote, giving him credit for making the story stronger.

Ghaywan also thanks his dialect coach, script supervisor Ibad Shaikh, and the whole development team at Dharma Productions — Ram, Soumil, Madhurima, Shubham, and Anoushka. These team members read every draft and probably went through some stressful moments too.

And just when you think the story is over, Ghaywan casually adds, “I also wrote the screenplay for Homebound. I did it myself.”

He concludes by thanking Melita Toscan Du Plantier, his co-producer and script editor. Her feedback, along with her ability to get Martin Scorsese to weigh in, pushed the project onto an international stage.

Homebound is a story about friendship, unemployment, and dreams in rural India. It’s rooted in real life but made special by a global team. Thanks to Ghaywan’s honest words, we see how many talented, passionate, and slightly exhausted people helped bring this film to life.

With a Cannes reception and an IMDb score of 7.2, Homebound isn’t just his most personal film. It’s also his most meaningful. After reading this post, it’s clear it’s also his most heartfelt.
