Rekha Bhardwaj, a singer, has spoken about her popular song Namak, which was featured in the 2006 movie Omkara, and how she had "wasn't getting much work" prior to its release. Rekha told News18 that she is at ease singing any genre of music and that her contributing her voice to an item song does not mean that she is now inexpensive.

Namak, according to Rekha Bhardwaj, helped her recognize her abilities.

Before she sang Namak, Rekha remembered the past. “It took me a very long time to rediscover that mischievous, naughty side of myself through song,” the singer said. When I was asked to sing it for the first time, I felt utterly unsure of myself. However, Vishal [Bhardwaj] trusted me. One evening, he played me a recording of me singing it casually and said, "Only you can sing this." With that, I had the motivation I needed. I had been having trouble finding employment up till then. My potential was made clear to me by that song.

Rekha Bhardwaj Has 'No Qualms' Singing Item Songs: 'Doesn't Mean I've Become Cheap' | Exclusive - News18

Rekha discusses performing "item songs."

She gave the example of Lataji Mangeshkar's "Aa Jaane Jaan," saying that a "song can be sensuous and still be dignified." "I wouldn't want to sing a song if it isn't beautiful. Any other format is acceptable to me. I have no reservations about singing an item number; it doesn't mean that I'm getting cheap or anything like that. Our cultural expression also includes item songs. The way it's carried out, not the form, is what matters. It's possible for a song to be both sensual and respectable. Look at Lataji's Aa Jaane Jaan; those songs were elegant, not vulgar, she said.
