The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case, a prominent political thriller, will be released on Sony LIV's (OTTplay Premium) schedule on July 4, 2025. The limited series, which is produced by Applause Entertainment and Kukunoor Movies, recreates the 90-day probe that followed the murder of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991.

The series is based on the first-person account of the manhunt, which was authored by investigative journalist Anairudhya Mitra and titled Ninety Days. Amit Sial plays the role of SIT commander D.R. Kaarthikeyan in one narrative, with the other characters being detectives Sahil Vaid, Bagavathi Perumal, Danish Iqbal, and Girish Sharma. The LTTE's operatives on the run are the subject of a parallel story.

The method used by Nagesh Kukunoor

Prior to the release, writer-director Nagesh Kukunoor informed us that he started by attempting to put aside any preconceptions he had about the characters. “My method was straightforward, and I’ve used it throughout my life,” the filmmaker stated. “It doesn’t matter which character I write—whether fictional or, in this case, someone who clearly lived and/or is living right now—I always humanize them.” I only have that method; it's really that straightforward.

Additionally, he stated that he handles every element of the story with the utmost impartiality. From an outsider's perspective, I try to be as unbiased as possible when approaching it, he said. I simply made sure to humanise both sides and portray it as it was.

The real-world investigation, which remains the biggest manhunt in Indian history, is described by Kukunoor as a series of "layers and ups and downs" that required no additional embellishment.

No commentary on current events

The program also addresses concerns about intelligence failures and public trauma. Kukunoor refrained from drawing any comparisons to current affairs, though. "No, I chose to stay entirely away from that... because anything that one tries to make a larger commentary on is open to controversy and sensationalizing in today's times," the filmmaker said. Therefore, I made it clear that I would only spend the Ninety Days in the manner that they occurred and that I would end there.

He mentioned that, even in his earlier fictional works such as City of Dreams, viewers looked for real-world comparisons. Therefore, Kukunoor said, "We made sure that we stayed to only the facts when it came to real material and not any kind of things that really do echo the current times...It was just sticking to the events the way they unfolded."

Thanks to its simultaneous focus on the Special Investigation Team's thorough procedural work and the fugitives' escape, The Hunt hopes to provide a concise, fact-based reconstruction as opposed to commentary. Beginning on July 4, 2025, all episodes will be available on Sony LIV.
