Nagesh Kukunoor Admits: “I Don’t Always Choose Stars, and That’s a Problem”

Recently, director Nagesh Kukunoor has been busy creating thriller narratives with a political bent on the OTT platforms. The director is currently attempting to reenter the film industry after spending more than seven years browsing the web, but getting finance for it is not always simple for him.

When examining the OTT environment

Nagesh has used his camera to capture a variety of tales, from the exciting world of City of Dreams to the intricate narratives of Modern Love Hyderabad. With his most recent film, The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case, which was just made available on Sony LIV, he repeated the feat.

For the last six or seven years, I've been producing OTT programs. I can still recall the thrill of the early years since it was a place I always wanted to be. As opposed to only 90 minutes, I've always wanted to tell stories in the long format and delve into characters for more than four hours, Nagesh informs us.

The space expanded considerably quickly, he says, since every streaming site required its content to be stocked. I have really benefited from the format, and it is evident that there is now a slowdown and a lot of change occurring. Nonetheless, I believe it's time to dive back into a movie right now.

His upcoming movie

When it comes to movies, Nagesh is well-known for his heartwarming works, including Hyderabad Blues, Iqbal, Dor, Aashayein, and Dhanak. Do you have a plan for what to do next?

“I always think about scripts. The National Award-winning filmmaker continues, "It simply depends on which one finally yells that it wants to be done and if I find the money for it."

He implies in the conversation that obtaining that is not always simple because he doesn't collaborate with major celebrities on projects.

"The fact that I don't always go for stars is my biggest issue." Since I've been in the industry, this has been a problem. In the last 25 years, when it comes to securing a theatrical release, you still need a face to sell. It would be a different tale if I were in the market for stars. Since I usually choose lesser-known new actors, the struggle is always striking a balance. “We’ll see; I’m still here after 27 years,” the director says with assurance.

On avoiding politics

He keeps his plays away from current events politics, even though they frequently address current issues. The Rajiv Gandhi Murder Case, his latest publication, is no different. The political thriller, which is based on the well-known book Ninety Days by investigative reporter Anirudhya Mitra, explores the fallout following the murder of Rajiv Gandhi, the former prime minister.

The series follows the real-life Special Investigation Team, which is headed by D.R. Kaarthikeyan and played by Amit Sial. According to Nagesh, the show may be about a political incident, but it is not at all political. As he put it, "The material that's handled in the show itself is not political. It's a true crime thriller… The idea was never to wade into anything that's political."

"I have hosted a political show for three seasons. I simply write fiction. I don't utilize real-life events. We don't do anything. We only produce fiction. That's all the politics I want to engage in. He concludes, "I have no desire to get involved in actual politics whatsoever."
