Manushi Chhillar Speaks Out on Body Shaming: A Call for Self-Love and Confidence
2 months ago | 5 Views
At a time when social media and public opinion often amplify insecurities, former Miss World and Bollywood actor Manushi Chhillar has opened up about her experiences with body shaming. Speaking at NDTV’s The Beauty of Business conclave, Manushi provided an unfiltered insight into how even globally celebrated beauty queens are not immune to hurtful remarks.
Manushi Reflects on Unfair Body Standards
Manushi, who won the Miss World crown in 2017, candidly spoke about the unrealistic beauty standards that society continues to impose, particularly on women in the spotlight. While addressing the issue, she was quick to clarify that body shaming has nothing to do with pageants themselves. Instead, it stems from societal expectations that equate beauty with perfection.
Recalling her personal journey, she said that when both she and Harnaaz Sandhu, Miss Universe 2021, faced harsh comments about their appearances, it became evident how deeply ingrained such attitudes are. Harnaaz, much like Manushi, was subjected to criticism after gaining weight due to health reasons, sparking an unnecessary debate over her looks.

Shutting Out the “Noise”
Despite the constant chatter, Manushi emphasised the need for resilience and self-preservation. She explained that true happiness comes from self-acceptance, not from meeting society’s ever-changing definition of beauty. According to her, if one starts paying attention to every opinion or remark online, inner peace becomes impossible.
“Sometimes it is good to shut out the outside noise,” she noted, highlighting the importance of focusing on self-love and building a mindset that is unaffected by strangers’ insecurities. Manushi believes that what truly matters is not the judgment of others but the care and respect one maintains for oneself.
The Shift After Miss World
Interestingly, Manushi reflected on how body shaming was not something she worried about during her medical student days. However, after she was crowned Miss World in 2017, unwanted comments on her body began to grow louder. She attributed this to the insecurity and dissatisfaction some individuals project onto public figures. “It says more about them than about us,” she implied, choosing not to internalise negativity but instead recognising its source.
Parallel Journeys of Strength
Manushi also highlighted the shared experience between herself and Harnaaz Sandhu. Both women, despite representing India on the global stage and achieving historic wins, found themselves under scrutiny for their appearances. Yet, they continue to stand as examples of resilience, prioritising health, happiness, and self-worth over societal criticism.
Beyond Pageantry: Manushi’s Acting Career
Manushi Chhillar made her Bollywood debut in 2022 with Samrat Prithviraj opposite Akshay Kumar. More recently, she appeared in Maalik alongside Rajkummar Rao and Tehran with John Abraham, steadily building her career in films. Similarly, Harnaaz Sandhu transitioned into acting with her debut in Baaghi 4, featuring Tiger Shroff. Their parallel journeys underline how beauty queens are carving diverse careers while advocating important social messages like body positivity and women's empowerment.
Celebrating Beauty with Purpose
In closing, Manushi reinforced the message that beauty lies within self-acceptance, not in conforming to external validation. Her candid reflections remind everyone, especially young women, that self-worth should never be dictated by unrealistic standards. The voices of pageant winners like Manushi and Harnaaz challenge society to rethink its ideals and embrace diversity in all forms.
