Mahanati's Immortal Legacy: Venkaiah Naidu Honors Savitri on Her 90th Birth Anniversary

The enduring legacy of the legendary actress Savitri was celebrated with immense reverence at a grand Savitri Mahotsavam held in Hyderabad. Marking what would have been her 90th birth anniversary, the event was meticulously organized by her daughter, Vijaya Chamundeshwari, and spearheaded by Sanjay Kishore, Chairman of the 'Sangam Foundation'. The ceremony, held against a beautifully adorned backdrop of the actress's photographs, served as a powerful reminder of her immortal contribution to cinema.
Venkaiah Naidu's Tribute: "Savitri is Not Seen"
The Mahotsavam was formally inaugurated by the former Vice President of India, Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, who lit the ceremonial Jyoti (lamp). In his poignant address, Naidu emphasized that the great actress has not truly passed away, as her extraordinary cinematic work continues to enchant and mesmerize audiences across generations.
He offered a profound compliment to her acting genius: "He said that in every film of his acting career, only a role was seen, and Savitri was not seen." This statement perfectly encapsulates Savitri’s immersive acting style—her remarkable ability to completely vanish into the character she played, allowing the role's essence to dominate the screen, rather than her own star persona. This rare quality solidifies her status as an acting phenomenon.
A Textbook on Acting for Generations
The sentiment was echoed by MLA Mandali Buddhaprasad, who presided over the program. He praised Savitri's contribution, asserting that she serves as a "textbook on acting for the film industry." Buddhaprasad further emphasized her unparalleled position among female leads, concluding that out of all the heroines in the film industry, "Mahanati is Savitri." The title Mahanati (Great Actress) is reserved for her alone, a testament to her unmatched range and emotional depth.
Honoring Those Who Preserved Her Story
The celebration saw the participation of numerous distinguished figures from the film fraternity, including veteran actors and producers such as Murali Mohan, Tanikella Bharani, Rojaramani, Sivaparvathi, and Nannapaneni Rajakumari.
A significant part of the ceremony involved recognizing those who successfully brought her life story to a new generation. The producers of the critically acclaimed biographical film Mahanati, Priyanka Dutt and Swapna Dutt, were felicitated, alongside writer Sanjay Kishore and publisher Bollineni Krishnayya.
The event also featured touching performances and tributes, including 90 child singers melodiously singing the pallavas (opening lines) of songs originally performed by Savitri. Furthermore, documentaries made on the actress and the award winners of a recently concluded Savitri song competition were screened, ensuring that her artistic contributions are remembered and honored through various creative mediums. The entire program was meticulously supervised by Sanjay Kishore, ensuring a fitting tribute to the cinematic icon.
