Legal Tangle: Vishal's ₹21 Crore Dispute with Lyca Productions Intensifies in High Court

Legal Tangle: Vishal's ₹21 Crore Dispute with Lyca Productions Intensifies in High Court

Actor and producer Vishal is facing significant legal challenges as his financial dispute with the production firm Lyca Productions has intensified, following a recent ruling by the Madras High Court. The case centers on a significant debt and an agreement that gives Lyca control over Vishal's film rights, a condition that the actor has recently failed to overturn.

The Genesis of the ₹21 Crore Debt

The core of the dispute traces back to a loan taken by Vishal’s company, Vishal Film Factory. Initially, Vishal reportedly borrowed ₹21.29 crore from Anbuchezhiyan of Gopuram Films. Later, Lyca Productions intervened and offered to settle this debt, stepping in as the party to whom the money was now owed.

The key to the legal battle lies in the agreement established at the time of the settlement: the rights to all future films produced by Vishal were to remain temporarily under the control of Lyca Productions until the full loan amount, including accrued interest, was completely repaid. This arrangement was intended to secure Lyca's investment.

Court Dismisses Vishal’s Defense

A month ago, the Madras High Court ordered Vishal to repay the principal amount of ₹21.29 crore along with a hefty 30 percent interest. Subsequently, Lyca filed a petition to enforce the agreement, leading the court to firmly reiterate that all rights to Vishal's films would remain with Lyca until the repayment condition was met.

The legal trouble has now deepened as the court dismissed Vishal’s attempt to renege on the agreement. The actor’s defense argued that he had not taken the full ₹21.29 crore loan from either party and claimed his only transaction with Gopuram Films was for ₹12 crore. He also contended that the agreement signed with Lyca in 2019 was "one-sided," signed purely out of trust and without fully reviewing all clauses, alleging he "did not expect any foul play."

The High Court, however, has rejected this line of defense, concluding that Vishal is attempting to back out of a legally binding commitment.

Working Under Financial Cloud

The intensifying legal battle creates a major headache for Vishal, both as an actor and a producer. Lyca Productions has specifically raised concerns that the actor continues to work on new projects without settling the substantial dues, potentially complicating the legal rights surrounding his upcoming releases.

On the professional front, Vishal is currently immersed in the production of his next film, Magudam, where he is both acting and directing. The High Court's order ensures that all financial proceedings and distribution rights related to Magudam and other future films will remain under the shadow of the agreement with Lyca until the ₹21 crore debt is fully cleared.

The ongoing legal feud underscores the high-stakes world of film financing, where agreements designed to secure loans can quickly lead to complex and career-threatening disputes when debts go unpaid.
