Following back-to-back challenging and emotionally heavy projects like Do Patti (2024) and the forthcoming Tere Ishk Mein, Kriti Sanon revealed she was actively seeking a change of pace. Her desire for a fresh, breezy film was perfectly met by the timing of Cocktail 2.

In a recent conversation with Zoom, Sanon explained, “I think Cocktail 2 just happened at the right time. I was craving for it. I wanted to go into that really young, urban, fun space of a rom-com.” The film, directed by Homi Adajania and produced by Maddock Films, draws on the successful collaboration that defined the original 2012 hit, which featured Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan, and Diana Penty. For Sanon, returning to this specific creative environment was a key draw.

More Than a Sequel: Understanding the ‘Vibe Sequel’

While the title suggests a direct continuation, Kriti Sanon emphasized that Cocktail 2 is best described as a spiritual successor—a film that carries forward the essence rather than the narrative of its predecessor.

Addressing the difference between the two films, she clarified, “Yes, it’s a sequel, but it’s more of a vibe sequel, I feel. The story is completely different, the characters are completely different, and their backstories are completely different. So everything is different, except for the vibe of Cocktail.” This distinction is important, signalling that Adajania is recreating the specific, stylish, and emotionally complex tone of the original, but through an entirely new lens with a fresh set of characters and relationships. The key elements connecting the projects remain the core creative team: Maddock Films and director Homi Adajania.
