Kalki Koechlin, an actress, has spoken out about her own experiences with the casting couch, illuminating the nuanced and sometimes blatant forms of sexual harassment that continue to exist in the film industry. Kalki told Zoom that these moments, even if they are sometimes overlooked or normalized, can have a long-term psychological effect.

An Indian producer once asked Kalki to join him at work, he remembers

Kalki recounted one similar occurrence from her time as a student in London when she visited Cannes as a Nokia phone marketing girl.

One was in Cannes. I was merely a college student working as a promo girl selling Nokia phones at the time; I wasn't even an actor yet. I was invited to the screening of an Indian film by a producer who had a relationship with my mother. He later asked me out to dinner. When I questioned him about job possibilities, he made it clear that I needed to "be with him" in order for that to occur.

In addition, she described a second unsettling event that occurred in Mumbai after she joined the film business. A producer informed her during a big movie audition that he would want to "get to know her better."

"The other occasion was when I auditioned for a movie here, and the producer said, 'You want to do this film? That's great, but I need to get to know you because it's a big launch. Thus, it was, in effect, the same as saying, "Come out, let's go out for dinner." As a result, I repeated, "I'm sorry, I don't want to waste my time or yours," Kalki said.
