Kajol Reflects: "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Would Be Laughed At If Made Now"

When it came out in 1998, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, was a big success and has since gained a cult following. Karan Johar made his directing debut with this picture, which was lauded for its original on-screen chemistry and soundtrack. However, many viewers have revisited the film over the years and criticized its problematic depiction of gender stereotypes.
What Kajol stated
Kajol was questioned about the criticism in an interview with The Lallantop, specifically about Shah Rukh's character treating her Anjali as a friend during their college days when she had a 'tomboy look' and then only seeing her as a lover when she started dressing like a woman.
Kajol acknowledged in response that she didn't take all of these factors into account while working on the movie. "We made that film solely for entertainment purposes," she added. I also think that movies mirror society. That's what Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was, precisely. At that time, people believed that way. We would be laughed out if we attempted to produce KKHH today.
'Maybe we made a mistake there.'
She went on to say, "The second half would likely feature that tomboy cut." At first, he didn't like her since she was wearing a saree, but then he began to like her as she got cooler and began playing basketball. Not the other way around, but the contrary. At the time, she was correct. Perhaps we are incorrect in our assessment if we were to perform it now or highlight the positives and negatives (The first half would be that the saree look was not liked then she would be liked that she played basketball and was cool). It was adequate for its era. We were mistaken in that movie if we attempted to choose it in that manner.)
The picture also featured a supporting cast that included Salman Khan, Archana Puran Singh, Anupam Kher, and Johny Lever. It had a lasting impact on the culture of the 1990s.
In the mythological horror movie Maa, Kajol was last seen. Her next appearance will be in Sarzameen, which will debut on JioHotstar on July 25.
