India has seen two heinous murders in the last few weeks that have sparked widespread indignation. The murder of their spouses was the shared element between the circumstances of Muskan Rastogi and Sonam Raghuvanshi. In an open discussion with NDTV, lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar expressed his view on the public outcry over these cases, acknowledging that he had "mixed emotions" on the matter.

When Javed was asked to weigh in on these two incidents and the uproar they have generated during the interview, he responded in Hindi, saying, "I have mixed emotions on this matter. The society is shaken by the murders of these two women's husbands. Then there are the women who are burned alive every other day. Unless they are burned alive, the lives they lead with their spouses are worse than any death. They are routinely beaten. The community isn't upset then?

"The community is very shameless," he continued. The fact that auroton committed murder, that men have been celebrating and carrying it out for so many years, and that it is still being carried out today is proof of how shameless society is. They are terrified by the killing of two women, but what about the decades of wrongdoing that men inflict upon women? No anger over that? Find out if they were compelled into the marriage if they did murder so soon after getting married. Is it simple for an Indian woman from a little village to refuse marriage? Is that something she can say?

In the East Khasi Hills district, in the Sohra region—also known as Cherrapunji—Raja Raghuvanshi's corpse was discovered on June 2 in a deep ravine near a waterfall. A few days later, Sonam Raghuvanshi gave up. Just two weeks after their wedding, Sonam and her lover Raj Kushwaha plotted to pay three other guys to murder her husband Raja while they were on their honeymoon, according to police.

In the meantime, Muskan Rastogi and her partner Sahil Shukla are said to have murdered her husband Saurabh Rajput by stabbing him on March 4, then dismembered his body and hid it in a cement-filled barrel.
