James Gunn: Anti-American Sentiment Hurts Hollywood Abroad
4 months ago | 5 Views
The blockbuster season in Hollywood has begun. Despite the success of Superman, Jurassic World: Rebirth, and F1 at the box office, there are worries about Hollywood's declining influence outside of North America. Today, the majority of high-budget Hollywood movies are performing better in the United States than internationally, which was not the situation a few years ago. According to James Gunn, the director of Superman and the co-chairman of DC Studios, it's due to "a certain amount of anti-American sentiment around the world."
On the success of Hollywood movies abroad
At the conclusion of its second weekend, Superman has made $236 million in the US and Canada, but only $173 million internationally. For a film of this magnitude, a 60-40 split is uncommon. In the past, major IP movies have performed better internationally than in North America.
Speaking to The Rolling Stone about this change, Gunn stated that "Superman is not a known commodity in some places. In certain locations, he is not as well-known as Batman is as a superhero. That has an impact. Furthermore, it has an impact on issues for which we currently have a degree of anti-American feeling worldwide. It's not actually helping us. Thus, in my opinion, all that needs to be done is to allow something to develop. However, everything has once again been a complete triumph for us. The fact that the film has been released and loved by audiences all over the world is merely the beginning of the tree that Peter (Sarfran, the other DC Studios President) and I have been nurturing for the past three years. As a result, it has been really thrilling to see it get off to such a great start.
Does Superman have a woken sense?
While fans of the character have noted that it has been political since its creation eighty years ago, many have also believed that Superman is too political to work worldwide. However, that hasn't prevented critics from calling it woke, and some Israelis have even boycotted it. In a different interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn stated, "I've heard people say it was woke, and then I've heard a lot of people say it's not." What in the film is deemed to be woke, I wonder? People misunderstood something I said, in my opinion. [Jonathan Dean of The Times], the London newspaper's representative. He claimed in the beginning that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the writers of the Superman comic, were the sons of immigrants and that Superman was written as an immigrant narrative. And I replied, yeah, it's a tale about an immigrant, but for me, it's primarily about kindness, which it is. For me, that is the focal point of the film.
Nonetheless, Superman is performing well at the box office. The movie, the first in Gunn's revamped DC Universe, has made $409 million around the globe. Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan are among the actors who appear alongside David Corenswet in the title role.
