At the age of 96, seasoned actor Jack Betts passed away. According to People magazine, his nephew Dean Sullivan confirmed that Betts died in his sleep on June 19 at his Los Osos, California, residence. The actor was well-known for his parts in traditional spaghetti Westerns and for playing Henry Balkan in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002). Doris Roberts, the actress who starred in Everybody Loves Raymond, and Jack Betts were good friends. Roberts and they shared a home until his passing in 2016. Betts's play Screen Test: Take One, which is based on a soap opera, was also directed by her.

At the age of 10, Jack Betts relocated to Miami with his family from New Jersey. He developed a passion for acting at a young age, having seen Laurence Olivier's performance in Wuthering Heights in 1939. He made his Broadway debut in Richard III after completing his theater studies at the University of Miami.

Franco Giraldi directed him in the Italian Western Sugar Coat (1966) and other films in the genre throughout the 1960s. From 1977 to 1980, he was also the star of Dracula on Broadway. Some of his notable television appearances were on shows like Seinfeld, Frasier, Friends, and Everybody Loves Raymond.

Betts is probably most known for his role as Henry Balkan in Spider-Man, where he co-starred alongside Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn. He later made appearances in Recovery Road, My Name Is Earl, and Good Trouble in 2019.

After word of the actor's passing, the Beverly Hills Playhouse honored him with a touching Instagram post. "Our beloved Jack Betts passed away peacefully at home," the caption stated. "There was only ever one like this, and we are the richer for having his presence in our theatre," the post said in conclusion. "Rest in peace, Jack."
