No longer do Indian films have budgets of 50 crores. The cost of producing films for streaming today is twice as high. The budget and size of the biggest Indian films are gradually approaching those of Hollywood productions. As the creation of India's first $100 million picture, a masterpiece that has been in the works for years, comes to an end, the mantle of the most costly Indian movie is about to shift.

The costliest Indian movie

Ramayan's version, which was written by Nitesh Tiwari, is expected to become the costliest Indian movie ever made. The movie will be made available in two sections. The production of Ramayana Part 1 has just concluded, and the movie is currently being processed. The movie has the largest budget ever in Indian cinema history, at $100 million, according to a Bollywood Hungama article from 2024. With an estimated budget of around 835 crores, Ramayana 1 has a larger budget than Kalki 2898 AD (600 crores), RRR, and Adipurush (both 550 crores). With a reported budget of 375 crores, the visual effects-intensive Brahmastra Part One is the most expensive Bollywood movie ever produced.

Prime Focus, the largest independent integrated media services firm in the world, is owned by Namit Malhotra, who is also the CEO of DNEG, its British-Indian subsidiary that specializes in visual effects. Namit is currently producing Ramayana Part 1. Ramayana's VFX are being produced by DNEG, a firm with a stellar history that includes eight Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects.

Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana is the subject of this piece

The two-part movie Ramayana is based on Valmiki's epic of the same name. In the Nitesh Tiwari picture, Sai Pallavi plays Sita, Yash plays Ravana, and Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama. Vivek Oberoi, Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, Kajal Aggarwal, Ravi Dubey, Kunal Kapoor, Arun Govil, Sheeba Chadha, and Indira Krishnan are among the members of the film's star-studded support cast. On July 3, the first look at the movie will be revealed. Diwali 2026 is the planned release date.
