Prior to her Bollywood debut in Cocktail, where she starred alongside Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, Diana Penty, a Bollywood actress, began her career as a model. Diana told Hauterrfly in an interview that she had previously been approached by filmmaker Imtiaz Ali to play Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar, but that she had been let go after two or three weeks of training.
Imtiaz Ali offered Diana Penty the role of Rockstar, she says
Remembering how she got her first picture, Cocktail, Diana recalled how she was offered the lead role in Rockstar while she was still a model. "I was in New York, modeling, and I received a phone call from my agency," she stated. They informed me that I had to meet Imtiaz Ali because he was seeking for a new girl for his movie Rockstar. I had never received official acting instruction, and I had never been interested in movies. I never believed that I could ever become an actor. I never thought I could do it. For this reason, I returned for the conference. I thought to myself at our first meeting, "Wow, he is such a nice person."
Diana recalled that Imtiaz was really friendly when they first met and that she felt at ease enough to share her innermost thoughts with him. Diana informed Imtiaz that she was unsure if she could do the part well since she had no prior experience in acting when he requested look tests and described the role to her. But after two to three weeks, Imtiaz told her he would make a choice and advised her to enroll in courses.
The reason Imtiaz Ali turned down Diana Penty is explained by her
She said, "After 2–3 weeks he said, ‘Look, I can see you have come a long way and I’ve seen a lot of improvement, but I still don’t feel you are ready to play the character in Rockstar. Perhaps you are not yet ready. He also thought I wasn't ready since he planned to film it in a month or so. Because I lacked confidence, I felt somewhat relieved. As a result, I returned to New York and carried on with my modeling career.
Only a year later, Diana said she got a call from Dinesh Vijan saying he was seeking a new face. Later, she learned that Imtiaz Ali, who recalled her and thought she would be ideal for the role of Meera in Cocktail, had written the screenplay. She remembered that she got a confirmation call within 24 hours of her audition, and that's how she got her first part in Cocktail.
Ultimately, Nargis Fakhri was cast as the lead in Rockstar. Cocktail is a romantic comedy starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone in the main roles, along with Dimple Kapadia, Boman Irani, and Randeep Hooda in supporting roles. It was directed by Homi Adajania. With a global revenue of ₹121.78 crore, the movie was a huge hit in theaters.
The movie Detective Sherdil, which Diana is now in, is directed by Ravi Chhabriya in his directorial debut. The film also features Diljit Dosanjh, Boman Irani, Chunky Panday, and Banita Sandhu in leading roles. It is now available on ZEE5.
