Huma Qureshi: Not All Item Songs Objectify Women—Some Celebrate the Female Form
5 months ago | 5 Views
Bollywood star Huma Qureshi is now getting accolades for her dance performance, Dil Thaam Ke, in Rajkummar Rao's movie Maalik. Huma discussed her experiences being pigeonholed into playing serious characters in Bollywood and voiced her opinions on the condemnation of item songs for being sexist and objectifying women in an interview with Bollywood Bubble.
The criticism surrounding item songs is addressed by Huma Qureshi
Speaking about the controversy around item songs, Huma said, "Kuch gaane hote bhi hain jo bahut male gaze waale gaane hote hain" (There are some songs that are clearly male gaze-driven). When you are aware that women are being objectified and that it is being done for a reason. And as a woman, you experience the feeling of "galat jagah aa gaye" ("I've ended up in the wrong place"). However, there is nothing wrong with the song's celebration of the feminine form, her sensuality, and her attractiveness.
In Bollywood, Huma Qureshi discusses her feelings of being restricted
Huma believes that because she chose to play serious and intense parts early in her career, filmmakers were reluctant to give her a complete dance routine in movies. "I think why should people box me that you can only do intense film, you are only good or doing this," she continued, speaking about being stereotyped. I'm thinking, who came up with this rule? Why should I accept your notion of what I'm capable of? I'm capable of doing this as well as that, and I get to decide when I want to do what.
Humari will next be seen in the film Jolly LLB 3, following a cameo in Rajkummar Rao and Manushi Chhillar's Maalik. Subhash Kapoor wrote and directed the third installment in the Jolly LLB series, a dark comedy legal drama. Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, Amrita Rao, Saurabh Shukla, and Annu Kapoor are also in the movie. On September 19, the film, which depicts a confrontation between Akshay and Arshad, will be released in theaters.
