With Retro, actor Suriya teamed up with filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj, who is best known for his work in Pizza and Petta, for the first time. The romantic action drama, which was just released, is currently available on OTT in a number of languages. Retro should be on your weekend watch list if you like the Varanam Ayiram performer.

The film Retro centers on a Paarivel who is taken in as a young child by the wife of gangster Thilagan (Joju George) after his guardian is murdered, and it blends romance, drama, and violence. Paarivel, who grows up to have a strained relationship with Thilagan, with the latter treating him as little more than a henchman, eventually has to give up violence in order to settle down with his lover Rukku (Pooja Hegde). As he discovers his dhammam (true purpose), however, his past, identity, and the people in real haunts and pulls him to his roots.

A retro conclusion explained: Why is Suriya the Chosen One? THERE ARE SPOILERS IN FRONT OF YOU.

Everything seems to be going smoothly until Paarivel's final task for his father Thilagan involves illegally bringing 'Gold Fishes,' a strange product, which causes friction between them. Since Paarivel has hidden them in an area that Thilagan is unaware of, Thilagan goes to his son's wedding location to speak about it. The wedding hall is the scene of a turn of events when Paarivel cuts off Thilagan's hand, and a stunned Rukku, who had been pleading with her lover to stop the violence, gets angry and departs the hall without leaving a trace.

The scenario quickly changes to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where Rukku is now a veterinarian. In Paari Vel, he is illegally smuggled to the island to meet her while serving his jail sentence, but only to learn how the island is brutally governed by a cult leader Michael and his father Rajavel. The father-son team operates a battlefield where the weakest islanders engage in combat against powerful musclemen. The search for Michael's true dhammam begins when he first considers Paarivel as a possible contender for the battle.

We gradually learn that Paarivel's real identity is revealed. He was the offspring of the island couple who gave birth to twins. He was sent out with a guardian (who was killed earlier in the movie) in fear of a prophecy that a kid with a spear-shaped mole on his stomach would murder Rajavel and Michael. The child, who was born with the name Jada Muni, is indeed Paarivel, and he is destined to become the Chosen One in order to carry out his dhammam.

In accordance with the cult ritual, Paarivel enters the battlefield the following day and this time battles for the weakest, nominating Michael and Rajavel as the weakest to be killed off. Rajavel has already committed suicide in the knowledge of his impending death, and we watch as Suriya triumphs in the fight and murders Michael. When things are just starting to calm down on the island, the Pani performer and his gang—who have been looking for Paarivel to find out where Gold Fishes are—arrive. They are taken aback when they arrive to find the people and Paari pointing bazookas at them, exposing the Gold Fishes.

Paarivel, outnumbered by a wide margin, begs his mother to use the bazooka, which frightens and forces Thilagan's party to flee. Additionally, the islanders now make fun of their former oppressors because of their newfound strength. However, we discover in Karthik Subbaraj's unique style that the protagonist had the last laugh because only one bazooka was completely loaded. Paari decides to give up violence, and the movie concludes with him and Rukku getting married, thereby realizing the prophecy and love.
