Vanity vans are typically seen as mobile dressing rooms, but for Bollywood’s biggest stars, they are personalized sanctuaries. Interior designer Vinita Chaitanya recently provided a fascinating look into the highly customized on-set lives of two of the industry’s top actors, Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan, revealing that their vans are meticulously designed extensions of their homes and routines.

Deepika Padukone: The Early Adopter of Custom Vans

Vinita Chaitanya, who has a long-standing association with Deepika Padukone—designing everything from her first apartment at Beaumonde to her new office space—shared that the actress was one of the first stars to take an active, detailed interest in her mobile space.

In an interview with Masoom Minawala, Vinita confirmed her extensive collaboration with the actress: "I’ve done her home many times—from her first apartment at Beaumonde to the one on top, which is her office. Then I did her van. In fact, two vans."

According to the designer, Deepika had exceptional clarity about what she wanted, approaching the vanity van project with the same focus she would a permanent residence. "She really got it and wanted it a certain way," Vinita noted. This level of engagement helped the designer understand the unique rhythm of an actor's life, stating that the project was "fascinating, especially learning how actors actually use their vans." Reports suggest that Deepika's vans are designed with a "fresh and feminine" aesthetic, using pastel colours and a variety of materials like paper, fabric, lace, and silk to create a comfortable, cottage-like feel that offers a sense of refuge from the chaos of a film set.

A Peek Inside Shah Rukh Khan's Functional Space

Vinita’s research into functional on-set spaces also gave her an opportunity to step inside the vanity van of Shah Rukh Khan, whom she encountered during a joint film shoot with Deepika. This experience offered a contrast in design philosophy.

Vinita came to understand the practical distinction between van sizes: "There’s a large van and a smaller van—the smaller one is for closer commutes, while the larger one is used on bigger studio sets."

While comparing the spaces, Vinita described Shah Rukh Khan's van as highly functional and comfort-oriented. "What was interesting was that while researching other vans, I walked into Shah Rukh Khan’s van for the first time... His van was fabulous—it even had a little gym inside," she revealed, adding that the superstar's approach was practical and cool. Shah Rukh Khan’s van is reportedly known for its futuristic, sleek aesthetic, featuring advanced entertainment systems and a dedicated space for fitness, reflecting his constant need for performance readiness.

The revelations by Vinita Chaitanya highlight how these opulent vehicles transcend mere status symbols, transforming into highly customized "homes away from home" that are essential to managing the grueling schedules and personal needs of India’s top movie stars.
