For his new song Sapphire, Ed Sheeran recently collaborated with Arijit Singh. The British singer shared the story of his first meeting with Arijit just three days after the release, fondly remembering his trip to the Indian singer's hometown in West Bengal, where they hung out, watched sunsets, and observed the moon together.
How Ed Sheeran Met Arijit Singh
When I saw Tum Hi Ho in Aashiqui 2, it was the first time I was introduced to @arijitsingh's music, Ed wrote on Instagram, along with a video of himself and Arijit riding a scooty through the streets of West Bengal. His voice, the song, and the setting of the film all mesmerized me. I contacted him after giving him a once-over, and I told him I was up for singing with him anytime he wanted. I joined him as a guest and sang since he was playing in London. It was an amazing show right there. In the dressing room, I showed him an early version of Sapphire, and he immediately came up with ideas for tunes and instruments. After that, we exchanged a few emails until I went to India for the trip.

"I told him, we should end this in person, and he replied, please come to my hometown so I can show you my home and culture," he then recalled. It's not often that I get to spend so much time alone with my father, but I was on tour with him. After we flew to Kolkata, we drove five and a half hours to his hometown. We took a beautiful barge ride down the river after we arrived, and then we rode a scooter back to the studio to complete the song.

Ed further remembered Arijit teaching him Punjabi, saying, "Arijit taught me Punjabi and how to pronounce it all properly, and showed me sitar. We had dinner and then strolled around the town with my father to watch the sunset and moon. I'm honored to have created it in this way with Arijit because it was a real core memory that I will always treasure with my dad. He's one of the most gifted people I've ever encountered, and I'm really appreciative that he shared his skill with me for this piece. In a few weeks, we'll be releasing the entire Punjabi version that we captured, but in the meantime, I'll be sharing amusing videos from our time together. Enjoy!
Shah Rukh Khan singing the lyrics of Sapphire, a song that Ed had been teasing for a while, was what grabbed the attention of fans when he ultimately released the three-minute film. The line "Cham cham sitaare warghi" and the desi beats had previously been teased by Ed. Ed referred to Shah Rukh as "love that guy" in a recent blog about the song, and he described Arijit as "the final jigsaw piece" of his song.
