In a Bandra hospital, renowned filmmaker Chandra Barot, who turned 86 on Sunday, passed away. With Amitabh Bachchan, he directed the cult classic Don in 1978, for which he was well known. He had been receiving therapy for pulmonary fibrosis for years, and he had been battling it for a long time.
Death confirmed by Deepa Barot, the wife
Barot's wife, Deepa Barot, confirmed his demise, according to The Times of India. She said that his struggle with pulmonary fibrosis had lasted seven years. Previously, the filmmaker had been hospitalized at Jaslok Hospital and was receiving care at Guru Nanak Hospital with Dr. Manish Shetty.
Barot's directorial debut, Don, was a smash hit with audiences and critics, and it is still regarded as his greatest contribution to Indian film, becoming a cult favorite in Hindi cinema. The filmmaker offered to work as the film's director and cinematographer in a show of camaraderie to his friend Nariman Irani, who was also the film's producer. The film was produced as a result of this action.
a gesture of friendship that influenced the course of Bollywood history
Not all of the decision to direct Don was made for commercial reasons. It was founded on a mutual want to support Irani at a difficult time and a sense of camaraderie. As a watershed moment of the late 1970s, the film starred Bachchan in a dual role alongside Zeenat Aman and has had a lasting influence on Bollywood pop culture through remakes and sequels.
Prior to entering the field of directing, Barot was compelled to escape from Tanzania to India as a result of racial tensions in East Africa. Upon arriving in India, he started working as an assistant director in the film business, where he picked up the skills he needed. His early years working as an assistant to actor-director Manoj Kumar gave him excellent training for a career in filmmaking.
A long-lasting legacy
Although his filmography was still little in comparison, Don managed to link Barot to one of the most iconic movies in Indian cinema history.
With his passing, Barot closed a chapter in Hindi cinema history, fuelled by friendship, passion, and an iconic performance that has captivated viewers for almost half a century.
