Deepshikha Nagpal on Regretting Roles in SRK’s Koyla & Badshah: ‘I Felt Ashamed’
5 months ago | 5 Views
Well-known for her outstanding performances in films like Baadshah and Koyla, Deepshikha Nagpal has established a niche for herself in Bollywood and television, frequently playing complex, negative roles. However, there is a personal battle behind the screen success. In an honest discussion with SCREEN, Deepshikha remembered how her televised persona elicited severe criticism from the audience, as well as from her family and society.
Deepshikha Nagpal remembers being judged for playing bad characters.
Deepshikha remarked, "I didn't want to do those because people started judging me," when discussing the fact that she was given just adverse parts after Baadshah. Negative roles weren't valued back then. She's a side actress who does bad things. When living in this culture, you don't want to hear that. I also played villainous parts on television because of typecasting. Despite the fact that Bindya was not negative—she was in love with SRK and saved Madhuri—Koyla was negative since she collaborated with Amrish Puri. In Baadshah, I was gloomy only because I was hanging out with the bad guy.
She acknowledged that although she had creative freedom in these parts, it came at an emotional price because she was frequently judged by others. With no one to guide or value her work, Deepshikha felt alone after her parents' death, the actor recalled. She added that her own family members despised her career.

The judgment extended to her daughter as well. I was made to feel embarrassed when I was told, "What have you done? Tumne toh kapde utaare iss film mein... Tum toh aise ho, tumhare bacche tumko respect nahi karenge." I began to wonder why I ever performed in Koyla or Baadshah. I gained so many insecurities that I quit discussing my projects with others. My daughter used to break Koyla CDs. It had a psychological impact on me, and I ended up speechless. I was shattered inside; I felt like a failure in every aspect of my life—acting, marriage, and everything else.
However, she claimed that her safe haven eventually became acting, which helped her recover after she realized that there was no market for her grief.
Regarding Deepshikha Nagpal
Deepshikha has frequently said that she entered the profession by chance and had no intention of becoming an actress. She made her Bollywood debut in the 1994 film Gangster and went on to star in Karan Arjun, Baadshah, Koyla, Barsaat Ki Raat, Dillagi, Rishtey, Partner, and others. She became well-known on television for her unforgettable villainous roles in series like Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, Karishma – The Miracles of Destiny, Baal Veer, and Son Pari.
