In the run-up to the release of his forthcoming movie Thug Life, actor Kamal Haasan's statement about the Kannada language has drawn criticism. The actor drew comparisons between the Tamil and Kannada languages, which prompted pro-Kannada organizations to attack him and even call for the movie to be banned in Karnataka. Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has now defended Kamal Haasan, describing the threats against the actor and demands for the film to be outlawed as little more than "hooliganism."

On the Kamal Haasan controversy, Ram Gopal Varma's words

"DEMOCRACY's new name is INTOLERANCE...,irrespective of factual correctness , threats to ban #ThugLife in Karnataka unless @ikamalhaasan apologizes , amounts to a new kind of HOOLIGANISM," Ram Gopal Varma wrote in his most recent tweet on X, formerly Twitter.

The tweet was removed by Ram Gopal Varma after he published it.

Concerning the debate

In the meantime, Kamal has filed a petition in the Karnataka high court requesting the release of Thug Life, which the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce has blocked because of his contentious remarks about the Kannada language.

In response to the criticism, the performer stated that it was created with a great deal of affection and that he meant "anything." "Therefore, let's leave all of these thorough discussions to historians, archaeologists, and linguists. From the northern viewpoint, their argument is correct, but from Thenkumari (south), what I claim is true, according to them. The academics and language professionals provide a third perspective. This is a response, not an explanation. "Love will never apologize," he was cited by PTI.

Mani Ratnam is the director of Thug Life, which will be released globally on June 5.
