Chinmayi Wins Hearts with Her Performance at Thug Life Event; Fans Decry Ban as ‘Tamil Cinema’s Loss’

Since the #MeToo movement in 2018, singer Chinmayi Sripada was removed from the South Indian Cine, Television Artistes and Dubbing Artistes Union (SICTADAU). She lately performed at the audio release of Mani Ratnam's Thug Life. Since her prohibition from the industry, there has been an outpouring of love for her, and many have referred to it as a "loss" for Tamil cinema.

At the Thug Life event, Chinmayi Sripada performs

The pre-release ceremony for Thug Life, which took place recently in Chennai, included a performance by Chinmayi. She performed her rendition of Muththa Mazhai, which was written for the movie by Dhee. The movie's score was written by AR Rahman, while Siva Ananth penned the words. Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, and Trisha Krishnan, the film's main actors, attended the occasion at which Chinmayi sang. Chinmayi's interpretation of the song even appeared to please Kamal.

She receives love via the internet

Chinmayi has received an outpouring of affection from supporters as a result of videos of the performance being published online. You deserve far more, Chinmayi, it's not your loss; it's Tamil cinema's. On X (formerly Twitter), one admirer remarked that your dubbing in Leo was excellent. A fan said in a YouTube comment, "Petition to release this song (Chinmayi version)!" On the audio launch, ARR clearly knew what he was doing when he allowed Chinmayi to sing. Chinmayi's rendition of the song was requested by many more.

"They can blacklist a name... But they can't blacklist a voice that healed millions," one admirer stated, and another X user concurred, "Seeing the TL filled with positive, praise, support posts for @Chinmayi feels so happy!!" However, these fleeting moments are insufficient. She ought to get justice. It's so sad that a man is now punishing a woman with a seven-year ban for speaking out against the creeps in the industry and for supporting the victims. “What a pity that the Tamil film business is missing out on using such an amazing singer; what a performance and voice!!!!” one fan wrote. She stood up for a cause and is still battling for it.

The rationale behind Chinmayi Sripada's prohibition

Chinmayi accused Vairamuthu of sexually assaulting her and brought attention to allegations against other members of the music industry during India's #MeToo movement in 2018. She was kicked out of the South Indian Cine, Television Artistes, and Dubbing Artistes Union (SICTADAU) for supporting the women who had identified Radha Ravi, the head of the dubbing union.

When asked on X how she managed to work in 96 and Leo in spite of the prohibition, she replied, "96 was before the Metoo broke out. Leo, I was hired even though the prohibition was in place, and the Radha Ravi's Union sought to identify who had taped me in order to ban the Recording Engineer as well. When a movie is about to come out, no one has the resources to wage these fights. Radha Ravi issues a diktat to all the Unions to state that a certain individual is prohibited, thus other Unions should not hire them. The same has happened to many. AnbAriv, by the way, was also prohibited by their Union. However, the Court granted them relief. For more than six years, I have been battling my case. That's how things operate.
